Village Camping Grotta dell'Acqua’s in the Gargano promontory, that sticky-out bit of land known as the ‘Spur of Italy’. It’s midway between the old towns of Vieste, home of the 13th-century Castello Svevo, and Peschici, both under a 30-minute drive in either direction of the coast. Make sure to stop by the beaches near these clifftop beauties – like Manaccora – on the way for snorkelling, spearfishing and motorised watersports. The site’s set in the Gargano National Park, great for cycling and hiking among the greenery to spots like Vico del Gargano, a crumbling old village 25 kilometres away… or you can drive for around half an hour to the marked trails of Foresta Umbra for whimsical wanders under the boughs of age-old trees. Keep a beady eye out for orchids – there are 65 species sprouting in the vicinity – and an even beadier eye out for rare-to-see wildcats. Ancient sights your thing? The Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo religious complex, a little over an hour’s drive away, was built in the fifth century and sits on an atmospheric cave ripe for explores.
