  • Family-friendly site in the foothills of the Alps, near hiking trails
  • Zoom Torino animal park 25 minutes’ drive; Turin an hour away
  • Swimming pool, shaded social area and restaurant on site
In the foothills of the Alps, about an hour’s drive west of the Piedmont capital Turin, peaceful and secluded Camping Verna is the place for those who enjoy mountain pursuits and long woodland walks with the possibility of the occasional wildlife encounter. The shady site sits at a cool 875 metres above sea level, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about the summer heat disrupting your sleep. While the kids have fun in the play area or in the swimming pool (equipped with a net for watery volleyball games), you can catch up on your reading in the communal seating area, shaded by an awning and tall trees. Barbecues are provided, and a restaurant next door serves Piedmontese specialities made with local and seasonal ingredients. They also happen to have a massive wine list featuring top-quality Barolos and Barbarescos… how handy. And what about the splendid network of mountain trails on your doorstep? Start your exploration, whether on foot or on your mountain bike, at the Monte Tre Denti - Freidour nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive or a half-hour hike), and be sure to keep an eye (or an ear) out for the many animals that call these woods home: roe deer, badgers, boars and foxes. Climbing is another favourite activity round these parts; even less experienced trekkers will be able to summit the lower peaks (how’s that for a feeling of achievement?), and there are also more challenging routes for expert climbers. A launderette, parent-and-baby washroom and amenities like a toilet block, showers and washing-up areas, plus recycling points, complete the picture.

Local attractions

Rural hikes and other outdoor activities may fill the bulk of your time around here but it’s worth planning a bit of time at some of the local towns too. A drive of half an hour or so will get you to Avigliana to see the hilltop castle ruins and take a dip in the lake, or to Pinerolo, a medieval town that’s known for its cavalry museum and military riding schools. The Santuario Del Selvaggio (20 minutes’ drive) and Sacra of Saint Michele (half an hour) are both close by if you’d like to take in a bit more of the area’s history. However, if the kids are looking a little jaded by all of this, maybe it’s time for an outing to Zoom Torino animal Park (25 minutes), where they can see big cats, giraffes, penguins and other exotic beasts. A little further afield, the city of Turin (an hour away) should have plenty to keep you busy for a full day out, including the Egyptian Museum, the gardens of the Royal Palace and the 19th-century Mole Antonelliana, now a cinema museum.
