Local attractions
Pombia Safari Park (10 minutes) is home to more than 100 animal species, from big cats and hippos to rhinos and meerkats. Hands-on experiences include getting to know the resident lemurs and the colourful parrots. There’s also an aquatic park with a shallow pool and waterslides.
In Novara (25 minutes), the medieval castle hosts temporary exhibitions, while the leafy Children’s Park (just behind the fortress) is a top spot for an afternoon exploring various play areas. The Galleria d’Arte Moderna Paolo e Adele Giannoni displays artworks by local artists.
On the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore, the Colossus of San Carlo Borromeo (35 minutes) is a monumental statue portraying this Arona-born 15th-century archbishop and saint. From there, drive another five minutes to the top of Sass dal Pizz for spectacular views of the lake.
