  • Dog-friendly site just outside Alba, in Piedmont’s Barbaresco hills
  • WiMu Museo del Vino a Barolo 15 minutes’ drive; Asti half an hour
  • Pool area and hot tub; on-site cafeteria and barbecue; e-bike rental
If you’re into wine (and, frankly, who isn’t?), a holiday in the Barbaresco hills of Piedmont probably sounds like you’ve just won the jackpot. And Agri Village Alba makes for an excellent base from which to explore this spectacular wine-making region. The peaceful site sits on the outskirts of the historic town of Alba (10 minutes’ drive or a half-hour walk), which is renowned not only for its vinous production, but also for its white truffles – perhaps you can see if your dog (who is a welcome guest at Agri Village) has a talent to sniff out these prized mushrooms… The Sentiero del Barbaresco path (20 minutes) is just one of many hiking trails criss-crossing the surrounding vineyard-covered hills, which are also popular with cyclists. (Speaking of which, you can hire e-bikes at the site.) You might well come across small wineries on your wanderings, so take the time to stop and taste the local offerings… then bring the car around to load up on your favourite tipples. If you wake up in the morning with a sore head after sampling the local reds at dinner, you might decide to spend the day on site, perhaps lazing by the pool or having a soak in the hot tub as you take in the views. A barbecue is provided (the nearest supermarket is less than a five-minute walk away), and there’s also an on-site cafeteria. On Sundays, when the latter is closed, you can have a pastry and a cappuccino at the coffee shop a five-minute walk down the road. A large toilet block with showers and disabled facilities, plus a washing-up area, complete the picture.

Local attractions

You can combine your passion for wine with a spot of contemporary art at the Cappella delle Brunate (15 minutes’ drive). Surrounded by the vineyards of the Ceretto family, this small (never consecrated) brick chapel was decorated with a vibrantly multicoloured pattern by David Tremlett and Sol Lewitt in 1999. After imbibing the local reds, you might be curious to learn more about viticulture. Head to WiMu Museo del Vino a Barolo (15 minutes), in a 16th-century castle, where displays trace the winemaking process and explore the influence of wine in global cultures. Renowned for its sparkling wine production, the town of Asti (half an hour) is also home to the Renaissance art collection in the elegant Palazzo Mazzetti, and natural history exhibits at the Museo Paleontologico Territoriale dell’Astigiano.
