- Remote wooded site on a nursery a 15-minute drive from Biella
- Santuario di Oropa 35 minutes’ drive; Lake Orta an hour
- Chickens, donkeys and goats; small play area; fishing pond nearby
After a holiday at remote, peaceful Agricampeggio Piantaroej, you might leave with plenty of ideas for your garden, since this lush, intimate site a 15-minute drive from Biella, in northern Piedmont, sits within a nursery that grows ornamental outdoor plants.
Spacious dog-friendly pitches have views over the surrounding woodland, plus electric hook-up and drinkable water points. The amenities block has hot-water showers and washing-up stations and is fully accessible for disabled guests.
There is also a communal barbecue area with shaded tables and seating – that’s if you’re going to do your own cooking, perhaps using the free-range eggs and vegetables grown right on site (when available). If you’d rather someone else took care of cooking duties during your Italian break, there’s a restaurant in the nearby village of Piatto (less than a kilometre away, about 15 minutes on foot), not to mention plenty of other options in Valdengo and Cossato (both five minutes’ drive).
Besides chickens, the owners keep donkeys, sheep and goats, all of which ought to keep the kids entertained. If farmyard animals don’t do it for your offspring, there is a small shaded playground on site, plus a fishing pond a five-minute walk away and several family-friendly nature trails in the vicinity. These include the Sentiero degli Gnomi in Miagliano (20 minutes), with colourful scenes and interactive activities centred on gnomes.
Please note that an unpaved uphill road makes access to the site unsuitable for large motorhomes.

Local attractions
The Santuario di Oropa (35 minutes’ drive) is a monumental complex in an Alpine setting, at more than 1,000 metres above sea level. Check out the collection of nativity scenes in the 19th-century basilica or the wooden statue of a Black Madonna in the ancient basilica.
The Virgin Mary is also worshipped at the Santuario della Madonna del Sasso, overlooking Lake Orta (an hour). Catch a ferry from Orta San Giulio to the island in the middle of the lake, where the Basilica di San Giulio has spectacularly frescoed ceilings; or head north, to Omegna, to shop for designer homewares at the Alessi Factory Store.
Start your day in Turin (an hour and 10 minutes) by fuelling up with a bicerin chocolate and coffee drink in any of the city’s elegant cafés. Then head to the Egyptian Museum or to the Mole Antonelliana to catch the lift to the top of the building for panoramic views of the city and the Alps.
