  • Scenic site near Cinque Terre National Park and Portofino
  • Shuttle bus to the local beach and train station in all seasons
  • Playground, modern bathrooms and seasonal shop selling cheese and wine
Get with ease from Camping La Sfinge to a golden sandy beach or out and about in the region: the amiable owners here lay on a free shuttle bus to the nearby sands and to the local train station all the year long. And what a lot there is to see with either journey. La Sfinge is in Liguria's La Spezia province, the spectacularly scenic home of the famed Cinqe Terre coastline on the Italian Riviera, part of the Cinque Terre National Park. This alone could keep you scenically and sandily occupied for weeks, but La Spezia's also the setting of Porto Venere Regional Natural Park and Palmaria Island, Italy's biggest naval base in La Spezia city, and picworthy pretty villages like Brugnato, Montemarcello and Tellaro… and has splendidly easy access by train to major Italian destinations like Milan, Florence and Pisa. Your scenic base (see pics) for all this is a quiet, greenly pleasant and family-friendly site, well maintained by a helpful team happy to help out with any info or tips you might need on the region – you might, perhaps, decide to meander from village to local village along the craggy coastal path…? Or cast off from the coast instead: La Sfinge is five kilometres from the small village of Deiva Marina, hailed as a top angling spot in all seasons. On site, facilities include modern bathrooms with hot water available around the clock, hairdryers and disabled access. From Easter to October, a shop sells groceries including fruit, veg, bread, milk and local meat, cheese and wine. The site also has a playground – not that the kids might need it if they're shuttling back and forth daily between the site and the beach…

Liked: Friendly staff, hot showers, reliable shuttle bus to railway station, small supermarket within walking distance. Good washing and drying machines and use of iron. Ok as base for exploring region

Disliked: Site was a bit tired, and certainly not greenly pleasant. The bathrooms could not be described as ‘modern’. No sign of hairdryers. The wifi was very poor. The shuttle bus had definitely seen better days! No sign of a shop on site - just 2 vending machines. No on-site restaurant/cafe

Local attractions

The spectacular Cinque Terre National Park, Italy's first, is one of the most popular places in the land for seaside and nature spotting hols: aim to bag as much time here as humanly poss. The park includes five villages accessible by train: Monterosso (35 minutes), Vernazza (40 minutes), Corniglia (45 minutes), Riomaggiore (50 minutes) and Manarola (an hour and 10 minutes), all very much worth a look. There are lengthy coastal trails to tackle too, such as the Via dell’Amore or Lovers’ Way, connecting the five Cinque Terre villages via stunning views over the sea. Closer to home, the little seaside resort of Deiva Marina has sandy beaches surrounded by green mountains, teeny coves only reachable by boat, and nature trails in the hills all around. Book a fishing or whale watching trip at the Deiva Marina tourist office, or set off on a hike into the hills – one trail runs alongside the coast for more seaside views and another snakes inland and up the Apennine mountains. Snorkelling, diving, windsurfing and canoeing are also easy to access close by. Climbing is available 200 metres from the site.
