For a serene stay in a scenic wildlife haven, park up at Oasi del Belvivere, a small family-friendly site on the outskirts of the town of Arcola, 20 minutes’ drive from La Spezia in the Liguria region of the Italian Riviera. Inside Montemarcello Magra Natural Park, Oasi del Belvivere is a top spot for nature tourism and ecotourism: there are trails to follow through the park where you can keep an eye out for herons, squirrels, badgers and boars, or you can head to the Promontory of Caprione (a hilly area between Arcola and Punta Bianca, on the sea) for further explorations. There’s more to your return to nature than the area around Oasi del Belvivere – pitch in the on-site vegetable garden and tuck in to some fresh garden herbs, send the kids off on nature tours organised by the team, or take a gastronomic tour on the agricamping shuttle. Guests can also have a game of football on the large grassy area or let the kids cool off with a dip in the paddling pool. Fire up the barbecue or get to work in the fully-equipped kitchen when you’re feeling peckish: get supplies for either at the supermarket 10 minutes’ walk away. For days out, it's' about 10 minutes' drive to the beach at Lerici, and 45 minutes to Porto Venere.

Local attractions

The very first thing on your to-do list When you reach Oasi del Belvivere (all right, you can unpack first) should be a tour of the villages of the Cinque Terre. The stunningly scenic villages (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso) are dotted along the coast between 45 minutes’ and an hour 10 minutes’ drive from the site, and are well worth the trip. Stay with the aesthetically pleasing with trips to Monte Caprione, Blue Bay beach and the Montemarcello botanical gardens (all within half an hour of the site), then pivot right in to history with stops at Castello di Lerici (there be dinosaurs), Castello di San Terenzo, Castello Malaspina and the National Archaeological Museum and Roman City of Luni. Feeling the need to burn through a wad of cash? Head to Sarzana or Spezia, both within 20 minutes, to traipse around shops, galleries and restaurants, or make your way to Pisa, 50 minutes away, for shopping on a grander scale (and a few clichéd-but-worth-it shots of you holding up the Leaning Tower). Wrap up your stay with a final few moments of relaxation at the spa Anthurium, 10 minutes away.
