  • Dog-friendly pitches on a mountain stud farm for Bardigiano horses
  • In the Arroscia Valley, 40 minutes’ drive from the Riviera di Ponente
  • Barbecue grill, woodburning stove and gas hobs on site
Up in some of the highest swathes of the Arroscia Valley is a getaway that really understands the art of ‘getting away’… A 40-minute drive from the palm-lined seafronts of the Riviera di Ponente, Fontana Fredda is a small mountain farm in Cosio di Arroscia in Imperia, only accessible along a one-kilometre dirt road by foot, mountain bike, horse, off-road vehicle or four-wheel drive. This remote and relaxing place is 1050 metres above sea level, and – as naturally happens in such gorgeous hilly landscapes – things like hiking, mountain biking, trout fishing, horse riding and saddle baptisms (lessons for first-time riders) are some of the activities available locally. If you want to try something slightly more unusual, ask the site about horse-watching experiences or a visit to a local wellness village. The base for your overnight tent stays is a stud farm for Bardigiano horses, a small horse breed from Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. The pitches are set around a stone hut, which was built around the year of 1930. During this time, the grandfather of the current owner’s husband moved to the area with his family to graze the flock and to cultivate wheat and lavender. Other ruined farmhouses from those times surround the farm, so there's a real sense of history to the whole area. Nowadays, the lower floor of the hut has a small rumpus room with a woodburning stove and gas hobs for guests to use. Outside is a barbecue grill – to pick up supplies for this, there's a small convenience store in the village just 15 minutes' walk away.

Local attractions

There’s a lot to learn about the Arroscia Valley, home of the Pigato white wine from a former Genoan colony and well supplied with other food specialities like olive oil, garlic, chestnuts and peaches (which, of course, you must keep your eyes peeled for as you make your rounds…). High numbers of hiking trails graze the valley’s slopes. One of the most splendid stops is the Arroscia Waterfalls (half an hour's drive). Forte Centrale (10 minutes), a fort dating back to the late 1800s, is surrounded by hiking trails. If off-roading takes your fancy instead, head to Colle del Garezzo (40 minutes). The coast is also well within reach should you want to switch the slopes for the sand. The hilly hamlet of Imperia (40 minutes) has a busy beachfront and restaurants serving the likes of torta verde (a famed savoury tart).
