With splendid sea views over the Lazio coast and within strolling distance of the resort town of Lido di Tarquinia, Camping Village Tuscia Tirrenica is in a fine spot for mixing up seaside days and city time (in Rome, an hour and a half’s drive away). In addition, this green site's spacious pitches are shaded by pine trees and all manner of greenery, meaning nature never feels far away. This seafront spot will be a draw for swimmers and sun-seekers, who have all of Lido di Tarquinia's sandy shores to play with. Those who haven't come to just unplug and who want to learn about the local area can also feed their curiosity at the numerous ancient Roman and Etruscan sites to be found hereabouts, or there’s an attractive bunch of medieval Maremma villages to explore inland. The old port town of Civitavecchia (25 minutes' drive) also has a whole host of archaeological attractions to tick off. Although all these off-site adventures are enticing, you'll also no doubt be wanting to spend some days rather closer to base – a feeling that may well be linked to this site's leisure facilities. In that category, the big winner has to be the outdoor pool with its sun loungers, but the play area, tennis court and seasonal kids' club are all attractive options too. Camping Village Tuscia Tirrenica also covers a fair few practical bases with its on-site restaurant, food market and free wifi.

Local attractions

If you fancy digging deeper into the history of the area, take a trip to the Necropolis of Tarquinia (10 minutes' drive) – this UNESCO Wold Heritage Site has 200 painted tombs dating back to the 7th century. Travel further back in time at the Etruscopolis Museum (25 minutes) where lots more historical artefacts are laid bare. Nature more your thing? The only saltpan in the Lazio region is 10 minutes away, where guests can glimpse pink flamingos and other endangered species. A different type of thrill can be found at the Aquafelix waterpark (25 minutes) where tumbling slides and rides should keep kids entertained for a while. Those who prefer to see where their feet take them may choose to simply wander the streets of Monte Romano (25 minutes) or stroll the humungous grounds of the humbling Castello Orsini-Odescalchi (an hour) with its plentiful lake views. If you'd like to venture further afield, head for Rome with a drive of an hour and a half, or hop on a ferry at the port of Civitavecchia, 25 minutes away, for onward travel to Sardinia, Corsica and other points around the Med.
