  • Lakeside site with private beach on Lake Bracciano
  • Swimming pool, bar-restaurant and playground
  • Visit Rome by public transport in around half an hour
A lakeside site, and a private beach, and a beaut and peaceful setting a 50-minute drive from one of the most visited – and famed – cities on the planet: let all roads lead to Rome with a stay at Smeraldo Camping and Village. This smashing site is on the shores of smashing Lake Bracciano, one of Italy's major lakes and a much-visited destination with travellers from all over the world. Guests who sensibly settle down here for an Italian break will have access to a sizeable private beach (kitted out with sun loungers, umbrellas and beach bar) as well as watery activities including windsurfing, sailing and canoeing, and land-based options like horse riding nearby. The medieval towns of Trevignano Romano and Anguillara are within 10 and 15 minutes' drive, to the north west and the south respectively. Smeraldo Camping and Village is a roomy and green site, filled with trees and plants. Leisure facilities include a pool, volleyball court, football pitch and a playground with trampoline; there's also plenty of room to run about (kids) and to sunbathe (frazzled grownups). The bar-restaurant and pizzeria serves traditional Italian cuisine, to have indoors or out on the scenic terrace. There's a mini market on site too, and a big supermarket is a kilometre away.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Electric grass tent pitch

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Staff were wonderful and so welcoming despite really bad weather conditions. They kindly allowed us to pitch our leaking tent under a gazebo on one of the pitches to keep our belongings as dry as possible. It's a shame we didn't visit in better weather as the campsite is in a beautiful location and facilities were very clean and well equipped. Thanks for having us! We would definitely recommend and return again.

Local attractions

Lake Bracciano is the second biggest body of water in the region, and a haven for peaceful types since noisy antics such as motorboats are sternly forbidden. Sort a windsurfing or canoeing session near the site, or drive the 10 minutes along the coast to access sailing and windsurfing from Trevignano Romano. The Bracciano-Martignano Regional Natural Park is a few minutes' drive away for nature spotting along its marked hiking and cycling trails. Obviously you'll be travelling along to Rome as soon as poss after you arrive at Smeraldo Camping and Village, but if you yearn to see an example of the empire outside the city, drive the 20 minutes or so north to see the Roman amphitheatre at Sutri, the famed town on the side of a tuff hill. Travelling further back in time, Etruscan tombs are carved into the cliffside setting of the Madonna del Parto; more modernly, the town cathedral comes with a 12th-century belltower and a crypt with seven names. Also a must-see when you're here is the town of Bracciano, about 20 minutes' drive away bordering the lake on the west. It's home to the famed 15th-century Castello Orsini-Odescalchi, one of the biggest and best preserved castles in Italy (and a celeb magnet too, with several swish weddings taking place here). Have a wander around its spectacular setting and drop in to the castle museum, to see six centuries' worth of exhibits including weapons, paintings, books and manuscripts.
