  • Eco-friendly site by Lake Bracciano, with private beach
  • A five-minute drive from Anguillara Sabazia and 50 from Rome
  • Restaurant serving local dishes, gluten free, picnics and takeaways
As you’ll know from your fluent Latin (cough), the famed phrase ‘mens sana in corpore sano’ translates as ‘a healthy mind in a healthy body’. And this is the stated mission of the staff at the spectacular lakeside site of Campeggio Parco del Lago, an eco-friendly place set up with everything you might need for a peaceful and comfy hol. For example, might you like to soothe your mind and bod with cooling dips or active times in and around an Italian lake, followed by a lazy afternoon on a private beach? Done – Campeggio Parco del Lago is on the shores of stunning Lake Bracciano, with direct access to its own private stretch of sand as well as a huge range of watersports including sailing, windsurfing and paddleboarding. Those whose idle and stressfree hols include easy access to copious amounts of eats are also sorted, as Parco del Lago has its own restaurant dishing up a full menu of regional cuisine, from fresh pasta and local veg to organic meat, freshwater fish and vegetarian options. Gluten free dishes can be prepared on request, as can packed lunches or takeaways for a day out cycling around the lake. The park is also only five minutes’ drive from the centre of Anguillara Sabazia, for shops, restaurants and terraces overlooking the lake. And as you’re in holidaying in Lazio? All roads lead to Rome too; from this shoreside site the capital city is 50 minutes’ drive away or 45 minutes by train.

Local attractions

Spectacular Lake Bracciano is one of Italy’s major lakes and the second biggest in the region (after  Lake Bolsena) and a top spot for activities on and off the water. You could spend your whole hols here: cycling or walking around the lake, sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, swimming and waterskiing on its waters, or mountain biking in the terrain just around it. The lake has three towns on its shores, including the closest one to the site at Anguillara Sabazia. Head here for the aforementioned shops and restaurants, then make your way out of town to small and volcanic Lake Martignano for a lawn beach, more restaurants, walking trails and a quieter vibe; this little lake is hailed as a hidden gem. Trevignano Romano, 10 minutes’ drive north, is best known for its Etruscan tombs and Roman Etruscan Museum. A 20-minute drive to the opposite side of the lake leads to Bracciano, most famed for its 15th-century castle now home to a museum with artefacts from the Middle Ages onwards. One of the best preserved in Italy, the castle has held several celeb weddings in recent times, and has been the setting for quite a few films: whether you’re more excited about The Agony and the Ecstasy or Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure depends of course on your tastes...
