  • Peaceful Lazio farm site with spectacular Apennine Mountains views
  • A hour’s drive from Rome; medieval Collalto Sabino 20 minutes
  • Restaurant serving organic cuisine; picnic tables and fishing on site
In need of some serious peace and quiet? You’ll certainly get that – along with bracing mountain air – at Agriturismo Ferramosca, set in a pristine valley overlooking the forested peaks of Lazio’s Apennine Mountains. The site surrounds a historic stone farmhouse and the pitches – some partially shaded, some sunny – have views across neat lines of organic crops flanked by the peaks of Cervia and Navegna. There are picnic tables and covered eating areas – pick up essentials at the small store in Turania (five minutes’ drive) – under the cover of a mature oak tree for alfresco dining, and there’s also a restaurant in the farmhouse serving traditional Lazio and Roman cuisine using organic produce grown on the land. You can order takeaway meals too, if you’d rather dine with family or friends at your pitch, and when you fancy a change of (spectacular) scenery, head five minutes by car down the road to the lakeside trattoria and bar. Anglers will find rich pickings on the Turano River bordering the farmland, and Lake Turano is 20 minutes away for shoreline hikes and boat trips. All around is abundant nature, making it hard to believe that Agriturismo Ferramosca is only an hour by car from the buzz of central Rome.

Local attractions

Time-travel back to medieval times with a visit to hilltop Collalto Sabino (20 minutes’ drive). Stroll cobbled streets lined by stone houses with wrought-iron balconies filled with flowers, check out the grand 17th-century castle, and see surrounding villages light up at sunset from the panoramic viewing platform at the top of the village. Go underground with a guided tour of subterranean chambers, stalactites and stalagmites at the Grotte di Val De Varri (half an hour), where you can also spot Bronze Age ceramics and flints. If your interest is piqued, there are more underground adventures to be had at Grotte di Pietrasecca (15 minutes). And should you wish to see some bucket-list sights in ancient Rome (an hour), a trip might take in a tour of the Colosseum, a stroll around the adjacent Forum and a leisurely pasta-and-wine lunch overlooking the baroque-era fountains by Bernini in Piazza Navona. Wind up your city sightseeing day with a visit to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City.
