  • Family-friendly Emilia-Romagna site with direct access to the sea
  • A 15-minute drive to the centre of Ravenna and an hour to Rimini
  • Bar, restaurant, wifi, play area and outdoor pool with slides
A one-time capital of the Western Roman Empire, Ravenna is home to more than its fair share of spectacular mosaics, basilicas and picture-perfect piazze. There's plenty of life in these old stones, though, and when the weather is fine the city's abuzz with sun-seekers heading to the nearby coast. Marina Camping Village is located slap bang in the middle of these splendid spots, in the seaside resort of Punta Marina. As its name suggests, the site has direct access to the sea (a fancy private beach, no less) as well as a range of facilities to help guests make the most of their beachfront hols. Fancy a break from the sand and surf? Here there's a fab outdoor pool kitted out with slides – a perk that's likely to be handy for keeping the kids entertained. Other active options include heading to the football pitch, playing a game of pétanque or hiring bikes and heading out for an explore. After, or instead (it's your holiday, after all), guests can head to the well-stocked bar, which serves top-notch drinks out in the open air. This is a mightily pet-friendly spot, with a handy dog exercise area and special canine showers for sprucing up four-legged friends. Meals can be sorted with tasty local specialties from the restaurant and takeaway; if you feel like cooking your own, you're welcome to set up a barbecue instead.

Local attractions

Historic Ravenna (15 minutes' drive) is home to bucketloads of Roman art and architecture. With heaps of heritage on your doorstep, you might not know where to start – if pressed for time, head for highlights like the spectacular Basilica di San Vitale or Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo. Culture vultures who have seen Ravenna and are still ravenous for more might want to head inland to Cesena (40 minutes) for gems like the Abbey of St Maria del Monte or the Malatestiana Library (which, according to UNESCO, is the oldest public library in Europe, no less). Kid-pleasing times are also to be had along this stretch of the Italian coast: Mirabilandia, the biggest theme park in Italy, is within easy reach (20 minutes), as is Safari Ravenna (20 minutes), a zoo home to more than 450 creatures great and small. Further afield in Rimini (50 minutes) is Italy in Miniature, a model village where you can snap the wee ones looming large over the Vatican or the Coliseum. If anyone gets too big for their boots, a trip to the giant rides and slides at Fiabilandia (also in Rimini) should do the trick.
