Trees for a bit of shade

  • Family-run site in a great spot close to beach and town in Palinuro
  • Velia archaeological park 45 minutes' drive away
  • Serviced motorhome pitches shaded by olive trees; dogs welcome
Beach a short walk away? Tick. Town facilities like shops and restaurants also close by? Tick. Family-run site where there’s always someone on hand to help out or offer local recommendations? Tick. All in all, it’s safe to say that Sosta Camper dell’Olmo ticks a lot of boxes… This family-friendly (and dog-friendly) site is in Palinuro, in a quiet tree-filled location that’s just a short walk from all the town’s main amenities as well as its harbour and beach. It makes a peaceful base for a couple of days of chilling out at the beach or some time spent exploring the rest of the Cilento region – perhaps heading inland to the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park or sticking to the coast for snorkelling, diving and boat trips to hidden sea caves. Set up exclusively for guests touring in motorhomes, the pitches here are nicely sized, fully serviced and tucked away among the olive trees for a bit of shade and a lovely scent. Guests have access to drinking water, toilets, showers (both free cold ones and token-operated hot options), a washing-up area and a launderette.

Local attractions

Palinuro is a gorgeous little seaside town that’s well worth spending some time in. There are lots of lovely beach areas to choose from, either in town or out on Cape Palinuro – the rocky peninsula that’s also home to the striking Natural Arch of Palinuro, close to Baia del Buondormire. Walking trails will take you to some of the best coastal views, while others can only be reached on boat tours. Local operators can also organise snorkelling, diving, fishing and sea kayaking. Elsewhere along the coast, you might fancy a trip to Marina di Camerota (20 minutes’ drive) or up to the archaeological park at Velia (45 minutes) – not as well known as its sister site Paestum but equally packed with well-preserved ruins to wander around. Turning inland, there are lots of great walks and wildlife-watching spots around the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, along with more historic sights like Certosa di Padula (an hour), a huge 14th-century monastery with impressive Baroque architecture. Traditional villages like Poderia (15 minutes) and Roccagloriosa (25 minutes) are worth a look as well.
