  • Easy walk/bike ride to Paestum archaeological site, 2km away
  • Coffee bar, playground and games area on site
You may well primarily know Paestum as the home of one of Europe’s best-preserved archaeological areas – a place of ancient Greek temples so fabulous they’ve been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Those temples are often seen as the star of the show, but it’s worth noting that the town is also home to a lovely beach that's often overlooked by visitors and therefore generally remains refreshingly quiet. If you like the sound of a break that mixes up a bit of ancient history and a good chunk of seaside time, then Wild Paestum should fit the bill nicely. Getting to the beach from this Campania touring site is a mere matter of strolling 50 metres along a path – meaning that it's fabulously easy to follow up a morning of historic wanderings with a dip in the clear sea water and a bit of sunbathing (both equipped and free areas are available…) The word ‘wild’ here refers more to the surroundings than the site – it’s next to a peaceful pine forest for that natural atmosphere but kitted out with plenty of facilities to help your holiday go smoothly. A playground and games like table tennis and table football are on hand to keep kids and teens busy, and there’s a coffee bar serving up breakfasts, snacks, coffees, ice creams and aperitifs. A mini market is 50 metres away from the site for your other foodie needs, and there are plenty of places to eat out at the town’s pedestrian area, a few minutes' walk away. Dogs are welcome to join you for a stay at Wild Paestum.

Liked: After rome and pompei we wanted sea and sun could not have found a better place. Nice and quiet paestum a bike ride away mini markets nearby and not over priced. The campsite clean and tidy good pitch size and the two owners are so nice and friendly

Disliked: Could have done with hot water to wash pots but just boil up a kettle

Fully-serviced grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Everything- Upon arrival was placed in the motorbike section- we have a small camper with awning. So this was not an adequate pitch and NOT what was booked! I pointed this out and was given a slightly bigger pitch in the same section. Bearing in mind we had booked a large pitch with space for our awning and more- so what we was given was far from what we booked. Ultimately we just left. As it wasn’t big enough for what we had. The site was overcrowded with ppl squeezed in. F that. These guys don’t care they just want your cash. Literally everything that is being offered and advertised is very much not what you get. If you want to be squashed besides motorhomes with large families either side with no room for your kit and on gravel then book this bs. But if you appreciate not seeing and hearing everything your neighbours do I would avoid like the plague. I’m an experienced camper in uk and all throughout Europe so been to quite a few varied places and I’ve never ever found a place that I’ve left immediately. There was no reasoning with them. Says it all.

Local attractions

If you're only going to make one outing, it should of course be to the archaeological site of Paestum – it’s about two kilometres away and easily reached via the well-maintained cycle paths and pavements. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to three fabulous temples – dedicated to Hera, Neptune and Athena – along with the Roman forum and city walls. The beach near the site is a family-friendly one with soft sand and shallow waters that are great for swimming or launching paddleboards. There’s also a miniature golf course close by, and a swimming pool in town for anyone that doesn’t fancy the sea. Agropoli (15 minutes' drive) is another good seaside town to know about – the cobbled streets of the old centre are well worth a wander, and there are some splendid views from the castle. It’s also the place to find scuba diving excursions and boat trips along the Cilento coastline.
