Dogs are not allowed at the site, and if you miss your pooch back home you might want to visit Foof Museum of the Dog Mondragone (25 minutes’ drive). In addition to scientific displays on the geographical distribution of breeds, the museum explores the role of dogs in the arts and their impact on the life of humans. The splendid, sheltered Serapo Beach in Gaeta (45 minutes) is overlooked by the lush rugged promontory of Monte Orlando, which is topped by an ancient Roman mausoleum. From the headland, there are spectacular views of the Gulf of Gaeta and (on a good day) as far as Vesuvius. The Royal Palace of Caserta (an hour) is the Italian equivalent of Versailles, with vast manicured gardens and hundreds of opulently decorated rooms. Be sure to locate the area known as the Cannocchiale, a long arcaded avenue directing the eye towards the fountains in the park.
