Every day can be a beach day for guests at Camping la Zagara… and in whatever manner you fancy too. And that’s because this Zagara Riviera plot is practically on the beach – only a very short stroll through a peaceful pine forest separates the site from the sands and the sparkling Med waters. Most folk would agree that a beach day is a very fine thing, but opinion can be divided on the specifics – so it’s handy that there are choices here. Bring your own kit to the free area, settle with sun lounger and umbrella at the serviced section, or gang up with pals for games of beach volleyball. If it gets a tad toasty out on the sands, there’s plenty of shade for siestas back at this tree-filled site. Should you prefer to see out the hottest hours with snacks and drinks in hand, retreat to the restaurant/bar on site or check out several other seafront options within a few minutes’ walk. Supermarket pickings for your beach picnics are five minutes’ drive or 20 minutes’ walk away in Melito di Porto Salvo, along with more restaurants, cafés and bars. Once suitably fed and watered of a summer evening, with any luck you’ll be all set for social evenings on site with a bit of entertainment that might include games nights or the chance to show off your best moves on the open-air dance floor.

Local attractions

Go on, scoop yourself off the beach occasionally to see a bit of what’s around the tip of mainland Italy’s ‘toe’. There are plenty more beaches to explore should you wish to stick to the coast, but even the most dedicated sand fans should break away for the short 10-minute drive to Pentedatillo for the unusual experience of wandering round an abandoned hill village. If that’s given you a taste for inland life, keep going a little further and you’ll get to the Aspromonte National Park (half an hour’s drive) for hikes taking in forests, waterfalls and gorges. There are several tiny villages in the park too – try out Bova, Amendolea and Gallicianò for castles, churches and little cafés. At the other end of the spectrum is the coastal city of Reggio Calabria, 40 minutes’ drive away or a half-hour train ride (although you may fancy taking the slow train for the cracking coastal views…). The Museo Nazionale di Reggio Calabria is the city’s biggest draw (and within that the two huge ancient statues known as the Riace Bronzes), and there’s also an art gallery, some Roman ruins and a splendid seafront promenade with views over to Sicily.
