  • Family-friendly site with swimming pools by the Tyrrhenian Sea
  • Within walking distance of a sandy beach and a seaside town
  • Piano bar, restaurant, pizzeria and dance floor; summer kids' club
This one’s a gem... Right by the Tyrrhenian Sea, less than five minutes’ drive from the coastal resort of Diamante, Lido Tropical has sea views, cooling sea breezes and a beach you can walk to. On southern Italy's Calabrian coast, looking out to the little islet of Cirella, this 24-carat site is close to watersports and hill walks, nature reserves and ancient monuments, as well as being within walking distance of an easygoing seaside town with bars, restaurants and shops. Lido Tropical might tempt you to stay put though, with its shady terraced restaurant and pizzeria by the sea, along with a piano bar and a dance floor for those whose toes do more than tapping. For other visitors of a fidgety disposition, there’s a pair of pools for swimming and cavorting, a kids’ playground and activities laid on in the summer. Older offspring aren't neglected either, with a games room for competitive sorts and a TV room for those who prefer a sofa. As the site's on a part of the coast that’s been both colonised and ravaged by centuries’ worth of Greeks and Romans, Normans and Saracens, there’s plenty of an historical nature to poke round. Start close by in Cirella town, five minutes’ drive away, with walks round the Roman mausoleum and the evocative ruins of the ancient clifftop village, which was sacked three times by Hannibal, Saracen pirates and finally, Napoleon.

Local attractions

If you’re interested in further time travels, take a 45-minute car trip to Papasidero, a hilltop town with church frescoes and wooden statues from the third and sixth centuries, or tour the well preserved Palaeolithic paintings in Romito cave an hour and 10 minutes away. For after more active stuff, Papasidero is the starting point for rafting trips down the Lao river, while the high peaks, beech and pine forests and vast canyons of Pollino National Park can be thoroughly explored on foot within an hour’s drive. Further off, but worth it for a real wilderness adventure, the densely forested slopes of the Iona Serra della Guardia State Nature Reserve two hours away are home to wolves and wildcats, buzzards and sparrowhawks. Catch boats from land-based Cirella to the little outcrop of the same name: it’s a quick trip and rewarded at the other end by clear seas for diving, quiet beaches for lazing and a herb-scented, wildlife-heavy interior for wanderings. And when you just want sliding, screeching and splashing about? Half an hour’s drive away, Aquafans waterpark has enough flumes, cascades and waves for everyone.
