- Peaceful site in the forested mountains of Vulture Regional Park
- Melfi Castle 40 minutes’ drive; Matera two hours
- Farm-themed workshops; organic products; playground; dog park
Relatively undiscovered thus far (apart from the town of Matera, which has featured in – among other things – a James Bond film…), the Basilicata region of Italy spreads across the southern Apennines. In its northern reaches, surrounded by the densely forested mountains of the Vulture Regional Park, Fattoria Didattica Herculea might just be the place for your next family holiday.
Not only will your canine companion be able to join you (and run around freely in the on-site dog park), but you might also learn a thing or two about farming. The site owners organise informative workshops on the grain-to-bread and grape-to-wine cycles, as well as beekeeping workshops, and all educational activities are followed by a tasting of the delicious organic items produced on site: wine, extra virgin olive oil and honey, all of which are available to buy.
Facilities include a playground with swings, slides and climbable structures; and picnic tables where you can devour the delicacies prepared in the communal outdoor pizza oven and barbecue station. There is also a toilet block (with a large shower room capable of accommodating guests in wheelchairs), a washing-up area and a drying room.
This is a remarkably peaceful spot, and pretty remote. The nearest shops are in San Fele (five minutes’ drive) or Ruvo del Monte (10 minutes) – not a formidable distance, but do bear in mind that both towns are accessed via rather tortuous mountain roads, so drive safely.

Local attractions
The Vulture Regional Park (within which Herculea sits) spreads around an extinct volcano whose fertile slopes are covered in vineyards, olive groves and chestnut trees. Hiking trails lead to highlights such as Sunflower Beach (25 minutes’ drive), not a beach, but a vast expanse of sunflowers, and the Monticchio lakes (35 minutes).
High upon a hilltop, the remarkably well-preserved Melfi Castle (40 minutes) dates back to the 11th century. After gazing in awe at its imposing towers, head inside to check out the Throne Room or the National Archaeological Museum (housed on the ground floor), which displays ancient artifacts such as an exquisite marble sarcophagus.
It’s a fair drive to Matera (two hours), but well worth it to see the famed Sassi, dwellings carved out of the rock that have been inhabited since ancient times. There are also rock churches, while elegant Palazzo Lanfranchi has collections of medieval and modern art.
