  • Family-friendly site a short walk from the beach in Lido di Metaponto
  • Riserva Naturale San Giuliano 35 minutes’ drive; Matera 45 minutes
  • Shaded pitches; playground and dog park; food shop and bar
The southern region of Basilicata is one of Italy’s best-kept secrets. However, thanks to James Bond driving perilously through the streets of its capital Matera in the film ‘No Time To Die’, it won’t stay like that for much longer. All the more reason, then, to make the most of its fairly undiscovered status with a holiday at Parco Vacanze Olympus, in Lido di Metaponto, on the Ionian Sea. This large, peaceful site is on the edge of the Riserva Naturale Statale di Metaponto pine forest, and its bungalows and pitches (for both tents and caravans) sit in the shade of tall trees. A play area with climbing structures and cargo nets ought to keep the kids happy while you gather together your beach gear. Then, it’s a short walk (about 200m) to a sandy beach with shallow waters where you can hire sun loungers and do very little for the rest of the day (though of course, you can break out the canoe or the paddleboard if you feel active.) Back at the site after a day on the beach, you can take a shower and let the dog (a welcome guest here) stretch its legs in the dog park. When it’s time to start thinking about dinner, you could fire up a barbecue (there’s a mini market for any bits and pieces, plus a washing-up area), but equally you might want to sample the local specialities and take full advantage of seafood restaurants and pizzerias in the village.

Local attractions

Founded by the Greeks in the seventh century BC (and later a Roman settlement), the ancient town of Metaponto can still be seen at the Parco Archeologico dell’Area Urbana di Metaponto (10 minutes’ drive). After strolling among ruined temples and fragments of columns, you can find out more about the history of the place at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Metaponto. Pack your binoculars and head to the Riserva Naturale San Giuliano (35 minutes) for guided and self-guided tours around a tree-lined lake that attracts wintering and migrating birds such as herons and shelducks, plus raptors. A small museum has dioramas and displays on local biodiversity. Do like James Bond (but without the crazy car chases) and head inland to Matera (45 minutes), renowned for the prehistoric cave-like dwellings known as Sassi. There are also ancient churches carved out of the rock and decorated with colourful murals, plus a handful of interesting museums, including the 17th-century Palazzo Lanfranchi, housing a contemporary art collection.
