  • Family-friendly site in Pineto, a five-minute walk from the beach
  • Within walking distance of beachfront bars and restaurants
  • Kids' club and family entertainments; restaurant and mini-market
The name takes its inspiration from the Greek name for the sun, and Heliopolis Camping & Village is certainly a place where you can make the most of those magical summer days. Less than five minutes' walk from the beach of Pineto and the Adriatic Sea, this site in Italy’s Abruzzo has the magic knack of combining peace and nature with a metropolitan spread of family-friendly stuff. A day at Heliopolis Camping & Village might start with ambling over to the restaurant for coffee and croissants, or picking up supplies for the day at the mini-market. Maybe you’ll be hiring bikes from the site to explore the coastal path or taking it easy by hitting the beach. There are activities laid on for kids throughout the summer, and when they’re not busy with their new best friends, they’ll be clambering about at the playground or battling it out on the table football and ping-pong tables. Older guests needn’t feel overlooked: from fitness sessions to dances, there’s something on site for everyone and in the evenings you can all get together for family entertainments. The restaurant dishes up specialities fresh from the local farms, fish straight from the sea behind you and pizzas from its wood-fired ovens. The centre of Pineto, with its beachfront bars, watersports, eateries and supermarkets, is a five-minute stroll away.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch (basic)

Liked: Spacious pitch surrounded by really pretty oleanders. We were shown to our pitch by a member of staff. The swimming pool was lovely. The shop was very well stocked with quite a large range of goods. We had our own water tap on our pitch.

Disliked: It was quite a long hot walk to the beach and the main holiday village. We were the other side of a 200 metre patch of semi wasteland and I walked along the cycle track to the beach and the pool. The walk needed to be more shaded and made more pleasant. It was also a long walk to the recycling/ rubbish area which was near the main entrance. When we returned from the restaurant, it was dark. Part of the road was not lit well enough, so I would not have felt safe on my own. The shower block was strange and seemed like a temporary structure with metal flooring. We could not get some of the doors to shut. There was no ventilation in the showers as the windows would not open, and in all the heat, we resorted to using our own shower in our camper van. We had a meal in the restaurant. Sadly the quality was poor; overcooked gloopy tagliatelle with prawns/shrimp with hardly any meat. Alot of it was just legs of shell. We did let the staff know at the time. Wifi would not work from our pitch and it was way too far to go to the reception area to make use of it. We were also close to a railway line which was a bit noisy sometimes. We did not appreciate the noise from leaf blowers cleaning up oleander leaves at 8am. At 8.45am, they did stop when I asked them to.

Local attractions

For a quick intro to the local area, you could hike an hour down the coast, or drive 10 minutes to La Torre di Cerrano, a sea-facing watchtower dating back to the 16th century. It’s thought that the ancient port of Hadria lies somewhere underneath the waters here; today, like the dunes and pine forests around the tower, they’re full of protected wildlife. Inland, it’s a 20-minute drive to hilltop Atri, a settlement since Iron Age times with a Roman cemetery and a pair of good museums explaining the town’s Etruscan past. Just outside, the Calanchi di Atri Regional Nature Reserve is an unusual landscape of peaks and cones where hikers share the high spaces with snakes, scops owls, kestrels and falcons.
