  • Family-friendly wooded site with direct access to Borgata Marina beach
  • Less than half an hour from Ortona for ferries to the Tremiti Islands
  • Large pool area with waterslides and poolside restaurant/bar
Mamma mia, this is a super spot for a few days’ downtime. Look one way and you’ll be gazing out over the sands of Borgata Marina beach and the Adriatic Sea beyond; spin around and a view of the forested Lecceta Regional Natural Reserve of Torino di Sangro greets you. The greenery spreads into the grounds of Camping Sun Beach, too, with plenty of poplars and pines around to cast a bit of shade for chilling out. Hours of splashing fun await here for water babies – you’re right on the beachfront, so you need only hotfoot it across the sand to paddle in the surf. Even closer is the site’s own large swimming pool, a fine family-friendly space with lots of loungers where parentals can relax while the nippers play in the kids’ pool or zoom down the waterslides. Landlubbing activities are plentiful, too – stay in the shade for video games, table football or table tennis or grab a team and head out onto the sand for beach volleyball, tennis or football. Or sink fully into that holiday vibe and grab a table at the poolside restaurant for leisurely meals, crowd-pleasing pizzas or drinks from the bar. If you prefer, pick up eats from the mini market and light up a barbie to cook your alfresco feast, or stretch your legs just a little by heading out to one of the local cafés or restaurants to sip a sea-view coffee or cocktail or stuff yourself with fresh seafood.

Local attractions

If you’re in need of a way to wrest the kids from the beach/sea/pool, try suggesting a trip to Zoo d’Abruzzo, a 15-minute drive from the site, to see all manner of big beasts including elephants, giraffes and rhinos. It’s also worth making the trip up to Ortona, 25 minutes’ drive along the coast, to visit the castle, the medieval quarter and the musical museum, or head a little out of town to Caldari di Ortona, where the town’s drinking fountain rather fably serves up free red wine for passersby. From Ortona or Vasto (also about 25 minutes away) you can also hop on the ferry to the beaut Tremiti Islands, for car-free wandering among the olive groves or around the coast to lovely beaches and coves. There are some great scuba spots around here for experienced divers, too.
