Oh, to wake up on the outskirts of a small town in the southwest of Hungary and don your bathing suit for a dip in the on-site thermal bath. Following a morning in the steamy waters at Castrum Thermal Camping, next on your mightily peaceful to-do list might be a quick bike ride to Zalakros (the aforementioned small town, which is a 40-minute walk away and famed for its thermal baths and pretty parks).
When your stomach starts to grumble, as it inevitably will after such exercise, there’s a café and a restaurant on-site for a quick bite to eat. The barbecue area, which has a collection of benches, is also ready to be taken over by hungry guests. Handily, the nearest grocery shop is in Galambok, 15 minutes’ walk away.
The team at Castrum Thermal Camping speak Hungarian, German and English, so ask them all about the facilities. They’ll tell you about the basic gym, wifi, cloakroom and the washer and dryer.
If your topic of choice is all of the possible day trips you could take in Zala, it’ll be good to know that the dog-friendly site also has direct access to a bicycle path into Zalakaros. Set between Galambok and Zalakaros, the site is quiet, but lively days out can be had very easily at Lake Balaton (25 minutes’ drive or more away).
Volcanic slopes, beaches, wetlands, hiking trails and vineyards have called many tourists to Lake Balaton… and the walled town of Veszprém (an hour and 35 minutes) is an especially gorgeous spot on the other side of the lake.

Local attractions
The nearest international airport is Hévíz-Balaton Airport (25 minutes’ drive), but that’s not the only place guests can take to the sky near to Castrum Thermal Camping. The family who run Zalakaros Airport (five minutes) will have their pilots take you above sights like Lake Balaton, castles and the lush greenery of Badacsony.
The situation is just as stunning on the ground, of course. Little Balaton (15 minutes) is a freshwater lake bordered by hiking paths and a favourite spot of the local birdlife (250 species of birds, as a matter of fact, including large numbers of heron).
Got a golfer in your band? The first golf resort in Hungary, the Zala Springs Golf Resort (35 minutes), has an 18-hole championship golf course.
There’s also a vintage car festival in June and a tiny house festival in September; they take place within driving distance of the site.
