Local attractions
You won’t have to go far to find intriguing attractions – starting with the Sódomb thermal spring, 10 minutes’ walk away. The water here is thousands of years old and packed with minerals that are said to have numerous therapeutic qualities; the huge salt hill that’s formed around the spring is quite something to behold.
Elsewhere around the village, you can visit the cave dwellings (with exhibitions, craft workshops, folk games and a 3D cinema) and saffron garden, and follow paths to the Bükkalja, ‘beehive stones’ carved into the rock. The Tücsökbus tour is a fun and eco-friendly way to see the local sights. Just outside the village are a well-stocked fishing lake and a paintballing site.
The gorgeous city of Eger (15 minutes’ drive) is a must-visit, with a 13th-century castle, Hungary’s second-largest church and a rare Ottoman minaret (which you can climb for fabulous views). It’s also famously a wine hub, with plenty of places to try the local ‘bull’s blood’ red wine in the city or the surroundings.
