  • Family campsite with luxury amenities 20 minutes’ drive from Ioannina
  • Lake Pamvotida 25 minutes’ drive and Vikos Gorge around an hour
  • Swimming pool and outdoor cinema; shared barbecues and kitchens
A new trend in outdoor adventure is upon us – glamping-camping. Fetch up at neatly landscaped Ioannina Camping, 20 minutes’ drive from the historic city of Ioannina in rugged Epirus, and you’ll soon know what this means. With its backdrop of forested mountains, the place sells itself as a campsite with glamping amenities, and your spacious touring pitches come with some pretty luxurious facilities. They include in no particular order: a pool complex with loungers for basking in the sun. Basketball and volley courts for when you’re feeling energetic, and a playground for the little ’uns. Barbecue facilities and shared cookers plus a shop for sourcing provisions… and perhaps best of all, an alfresco mini cinema for watching films after dark. Other more practical amenities cover pristine 24-hour showers, communal dish-washing spaces and a laundry room. Eco-friendly electric-vehicle charging stations are at your disposal, as is a ramp for washing and servicing cars, and special areas are provided for the disposal of chemical and organic waste from motorhomes and caravans. Friendly and multilingual staff in reception can organise your bespoke excursions and hire out bikes and safety gear. And that’s what you get at Ioannina Camping, the campsite that thinks it’s a glampsite.

Local attractions

Buzzy Ioannina (20 minutes’ drive) is packed full of cobbled streets lined with historic buildings, museums and monuments linked to the Ottoman Empire. Start your tour at the Clock Tower, a city landmark built in 1906. From here, it’s a short walk to the mosque and madrasa at the Veli Pasha Building Complex, and on to Litharitsia Fortress, which has a rooftop restaurant with views over the whole city. After lunch, take a walking tour of the photogenic ruins of Ioannina Castle. Sightseeing done, head for Lake Pamvotida (25 minutes) for a stroll or bike ride around its shoreline, keeping an eye out for some of the 170 species of bird that have been spotted there. You can also jump on a cruise boat out to Nisi (they depart close to Ioannina Castle), the island in the middle of the lake, for a slap-up fish supper in a lakeside taverna. The spectacular mountain scenery of Epirus also warrants exploration. You can go hiking and mountain biking in Vikos Gorge, rafting along the Voidomatis River (both about an hour) and paragliding high above them both. Meanwhile, watersports centres on Lake Aoos (55 minutes) offer kayaking and canoeing expeditions with stunning views of the Pindos Mountains.
