  • Quiet site in the Rhön mountains, five minutes' walk from a lake
  • Wartburg castle and Wasserkuppen mountain hikes within an hour
  • Bar and restaurant; sauna and bowling alley
Might you fancy mountain walks and forest lakes, finished off with a sauna session and then a pitched battle in a bowling alley? Whatever you feel like, it’s possible at Campingplatz Rhön Feeling in Thüringen, a spacious site surrounded by the low peaks and dense beech forests of Germany’s Rhön region. This site in the village of Bernshausen started from the ground up when there weren’t enough places for everyone who came to the country fair, so a few folk spent the night on the field. Then a few more came, and then some bright spark installed electricity and water pipes… and now it’s a full-on Thuringian thing, at the centre of a complex that includes a bar and restaurant, a sauna and an indoor bowling alley. Wunderbar. Within a five-minute walk, there’s a horse riding centre for those who’d like to explore the hills, valleys, heaths and bogs from the saddle, and a little lake for swims and fishing at a more leisurely pace. Once limbered up, you could sample some of the hundreds of local hiking trails, or head over to the ancient village of Neidhartshausen (15 minutes) whose half-timbered houses and 17th-century church hide a secret: a protected colony of mouse-eared bats resides in the rafters and the villagers have become guardians and guides.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The owner of the hotel / campsite greeted us on our arrival , he was very lovely , very helpful & information. He pointed out the local beauty spots , there is also an up to date information technology system in the reception area of the hotel. There’s a pin indoor bar & restaurant / games area. There’s also a gorgeous garden area for drinks & food. At night they lit a fire pit. The surrounding views are spectacular. Washing & toilet facilities are immaculate & well maintained to a high standard as were the washing facilities. ( washer & dryer). We stayed an extra night. Would definitely recommend & would love to return to the area.

Disliked: Nothing,

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Very nice restaurant, beer, garden with sitting and party area, amazing bathroom facilities next to the camping area, friendly and helpful staff, all you need for a good stay.

Disliked: Equipping staff with slightly better English language skills before next season would be amazing, they all seem great and hard working people. Do that and the rating will be 5/5, no doubt.

Local attractions

If you’re hankering after heights, the Wasserkuppen and Kreuzberg peaks are the loftiest of the locals (50 minutes and an hour away), the former popular with paragliders and the latter popular with everyone, due to the monastery making beer and cheese at the top. You could always go inside a mountain instead, heading leagues beneath the earth at the Merkers Adventure Mine (25 minutes) where the saltmines contain an enormous crystal cave, a room where the Nazis stored stolen gold, and a cavernous subterranean concert hall with laser shows. If that sounds like hard work, take a tasty tour of the Viba nougat factory, immerse yourself in nostalgia for the bygone German Democratic Republic at the Geisa Heimatmuseum, or visit Point Alpha, where capitalist West and communist East once divided; all are half an hour away. Alternatively, you could just whizz down the Inselsberg on the mountain luge, 45 minutes from the site. An hour away, the Wartburg awaits: a UNESCO-listed castle on a precipice surrounded by narrow gorges, and ancient beech forests home to European wildcats. After all that roaming of the Rhön, visit Bad Salzungen (15 minutes), for a soak in the saltwater springs, pools and saunas; you may not be cured, but you'll certainly be chilled.
