  • Automated tourer park on the Freiberger Mulde river at Leisnig, Saxony
  • Mildenstein Castle 15 minutes’ walk and Buch Abbey 10 minutes’ drive
  • Well-tended, leafy pitches with a playground; shops five minutes’ walk
Set on the banks of the Freiberger Mulde river and five minutes’ drive from the historic centre of Leisnig, Womo Leisnig is a well-kept touring park in Saxony’s Mittelsachsen district. The entire site is automated, and it’s video-monitored for your safety and security. Handy facilities include toilets and hot showers (some of which have disabled access), washing machines and dryers – and they can all be used around the clock. Electric hook-ups, a water supply and sewage connection are available on each pitch, and there’s a playground for younger guests. On the food front, a bakery and butcher are right next to the site and a supermarket is within five minutes’ walk. Leisnig itself (15 minutes’ walk) has a very elegant old town to wander around – you can download self-guided tours around its cobbled lanes, and visit the imposing Mildenstein Castle, set high up on a plug of volcanic rock (you'll be able to spot this from the pitches too). If you’ve time to spare for a jaunt downstream on the Freiberger Mulde, you can hire canoes about five minutes’ stroll away along the river banks.

Local attractions

Pride of place in the medieval heart of Leisnig (15 minutes’ walk) goes to Mildenstein Castle, one of the oldest in Saxony and with its roots in the 10th century. Behind the metre-thick walls, it once housed a prison and tours take in gruesome displays of torture instruments as well as the Romanesque castle chapel and medieval knights’ halls. Be sure to get out to Buch Abbey (10 minutes’ drive), a medieval Cistercian monastery set over the Freiberger Mulde river valley; you can visit the restored chapter house, abbot’s house, infirmary and chapel. Every second weekend a massive farmers’ market takes place in the courtyard. The surrounding Maylust hiking area has numerous scenic trails along the river. You can also discover the river by bike; the Mulde Cycle Path runs along its banks and takes you to the confluence of the Zwickauer Mulde and Freiberger Mulde at near Sermuth (45 minutes by bike), where the two tributaries merge. It's a peaceful spot with scenic views, picnic areas and a scattering of cafés and restaurants.
