  • Rural site 10 minutes’ drive from Havelberg’s historic attractions
  • Tangermünde half an hour’s drive; Bad Wilsnack spas 25 minutes
  • Peaceful pitches with horses, goats and sheep grazing nearby
Well, here’s something a bit different… the chance to stay at a former railway station at Sandauer Bahnhof, 10 minutes’ drive from the castle and churches of Havelberg in Saxony-Anhalt. The pitches are actually on the former train tracks adjacent to the massive and historic station building, which is slowly being renovated. This tiny site is surrounded by open fields and peaceful countryside – and yet it’s only an hour and a half’s drive from Berlin, making it an easy overnight getaway or weekend escape from the din of the big city. There’s a wild camping vibe to this site – admittedly with solar-powered electricity, showers and loos as part of the package. It’s wonderfully family-friendly too, with ponies, sheep and goats grazing in neighbouring fields and lots of birds and rabbits about the place. Dogs are allowed on site too, and they can stretch their paws with strolls along the River Elbe, jst across the fields. Should you need to replenish stocks, there’s a supermarket in Havelberg. If self-catering is not for you, there are several cafés and restaurants serving robust regional dishes within 15 minutes’ drive.

Local attractions

With its ancient centre built on an island in the Elbe River, the Hanseatic town of Havelberg (10 minutes’ drive) is the top place to start exploring this historic corner of Saxony-Anhalt. Tour its red-brick castle, cathedral and churches, or take a boat trip along the river. Tangermünde (half an hour) is another gorgeous medieval town with Gothic-era ramparts and half-timbered houses to stroll around. Kids with you? Hopefully they’ll all jump at the chance to visit the big cats in the Hansestadt Stendal - Tiergarten (40 minutes), while there are brown bears and dromedaries in spacious enclosures at Tierpark Perleberg (45 minutes). Another fun-filled day out can be had on the waterslides and high-octane coasters at Karls Erlebnis-Dorf - Elstal (an hour and 20 minutes). And if all that running around sightseeing has tired you out, you owe yourself a day at the thermal baths in Bad Wilsnack (25 minutes). Here you can kick back with saunas, massages and soaks in mineral-rich therapeutic pools.
