General
- Family-friendly glamping site by the river in the village of Walsheim
- Ottweiler and Saarbrücken within 45 minutes' drive
- Next door to an Olympic-sized swimming pool with slide and kids' pool
Bedding down in the Bliesgau biosphere reserve – sounds promising, ja? It’ll sound even better if you book one of the smart safari tents at Camping Walsheim, a Saarland glamping spot five minutes’ bike ride or 15 minutes’ walk from the shops, restaurants and bakeries of Walsheim.
There’s no need to haul around a whole pile of kit here, as the tents have been set up with plenty of useful bits and bobs, including a dining table, crockery and a mobile kitchen that can be set up indoors or out depending on the weather. Bathrooms a short walk away have been kitted out with plenty of family-friendly touches including family showers and a baby changing area.
Essentials all sorted, guests can get stuck in to their choice of holiday activities – being in a UNESCO-listed reserve means plenty of places nearby to walk or ride bikes through forests, orchards and open spaces. There are gorgeous views all around too if you fancy sitting down to take it all in for a while (a particularly choice spot on site is by the banks of the Hetschenbach river).
Cool off by skipping next door to the public swimming pool, where there’s an Olympic-sized outdoor pool, kids’ pool, waterslide and spacious sun terrace, along with a playground and a beach volleyball court. There’s also a playground and ping pong table to continue playtime on site, all fuelled by drinks and snacks from the café.

Local attractions
Mix up a bit of history with your local wanderings by heading out to Zweibrucken Castle (20 minutes’ drive) or heading even further back into the past at Gondwana prehistory park (40 minutes), where stunning animations and audiovisuals bring giant dinosaurs direct to 21st-century life.
There are pretty buildings aplenty to spot with an amble around the Old Town, castle and baroque town hall in Blieskastel (20 minutes) or on a similar stroll around Ottweiler (45 minutes), for glimpses into days of yore at the School Museum and Bakery Museum, or rides on a 1950s train.
Splendid Saarbrücken (40 minutes) is a rich source of baroque buildings too; it’s also got a fine zoo and a castle where you can delve down into a network of underground tunnels and chambers that have been excavated over recent years.
Done enough wandering? Settle in for a soak in the warm waters of the Saarland thermal spa (25 minutes).
