- Well-maintained site with mountain views at Kirchenlamitz in Bavaria
- Granitlabyrinth half an hour’s walk; Epprechtstein Castle 50 minutes
- Bread service and drinks corner; communal diner; takeaways available
Surrounded by the forested landscapes of Upper Franconia and with far-reaching views to the Fichtel Mountains on the horizon, Fichtelpark is 10 minutes’ walk outside the small town of Kirchenlamitz – a popular centre for hiking and cycling – in Bavaria. The site owners pride themselves on their personal touch, and this really shows at the property, with its neatly kept and prettily landscaped gardens planted with colourful flowers.
Touches to make your life easy on site include a daily bread roll service and a drinks corner. You can meet up with fellow travellers for a beer, wine or soft drinks in the communal motorhome diner, which is usually open Friday and Saturday evenings – it’s also where the owners occasionally offer meals to guests.
In summer, a daily breakfast basket service is available, while a buffet breakfast is provided on the first and third Sunday of each month (advance booking required). From Wednesday to Saturday each week, you can order a takeaway supper or pizza delivered right to your pitch.
There’s also a shower block with spotless amenities, a dishwashing area, washing machine and dryer. If you feel in need of some ‘me’ time, there’s a discounted deal with a local spa, and even your dogs get a look in – they are very welcome on site and there are heaps of hiking paths around for walkies.

Local attractions
Keen walkers and cyclists can head for the network of signposted trails around Kirchenlamitz (10 minutes’ walk). If you’d care to combine your exercise with a bit of local history, follow the ‘Quarry’ hiking route to the hilltop remains of medieval Epprechtstein Castle (50 minutes) for stunning views over forested valleys to the Fichtel peaks. You can take a cooling dip in the lake at Forstwiesenbruch (also 50 minutes), and if you’ve got kids along with you, the maze-like Granitlabyrinth (half an hour) is a popular side visit too.
If you’re up for a longer trek, aim for the observation tower at Grosser Kornberg (an hour and 20 minutes), where there’s also a playpark and a freeride downhill run for skateboarders. You have plenty of other hiking options to choose from, including the forested Saalequelle (look out for birds of prey) and Zellerfels (both 20 minutes’ drive), where you’ll come across dramatic formations in the sandstone rock.
You can find more bizarre granite shapes at Drei Brüder (Three Brothers, 20 minutes), a popular landmark for rock climbing, and there are tumbling waterfalls to be admired at Thus (15 minutes), accessed via a ramble through moss-swathed woodland.
