Bikes, beer and bratwurst are all on the menu for your Bavarian break at Camping Paradies Franken, a quiet family site near the village of Simmershofen and 10 minutes from the autobahn. This is prime territory for walkers and cyclists – forests, hills, medieval villages and castles are all within easy reach of the site, and idyllic wine wanderings await on the Weinparadies Franken trails, an hour away by bike or half hour in the car. No space to bring a bike? No worries – hire one on site. A restaurant is on site to fuel your jaunts: breakfast is available on request but the place really gets going in the afternoons, when you can reward your active hiking efforts with a coffee and slab of homemade cake or tart. Later on, dinner is a feast of local faves, with the traditional emphasis on schnitzel and sausages. Feeling the need to create fire? You’re most welcome to light up a barbecue here; pick up your own sausages from the supermarket a 10-minute drive away. Fresh bread is delivered to site every day, but if you’ve scoffed the lot there’s a bakery a five-minute walk away for top-up supplies. Gathered together in the main building are all the useful amenities one would hope for: a launderette with washing machine and tumble dryer and bathrooms with free hot showers, accessible facilities and a baby bathroom. Also over here is a bonus prize in the form of a massage room, for post-activity pummelling.

Local attractions

If you’d like to head out on foot or by bike from the site have a chat with the friendly staff on site for advice and maps. An easy 10-minute walk takes you to Walkershofen Palace, or you could walk for an hour and a quarter to get to the medieval town of Aub to see the moated castle and Old Jewish Cemetery. Those fond of a tipple or two will no doubt be drawn to the Weinparadiesweg, a 21-kilometre trail starting around 25 minutes’ drive away in Bullenheim. Wander or cycle through vineyards to various lookout points, via sampling a few treats along the way; guided tours are often available too. Not a wine fan? Try a brewery tour instead in Reichelshofen, a 15-minute drive away. Kid-friendly attractions nearby include the Feldberg climbing forest and its treetop trails, as well as the Tierpark Sommerhausen zoo with its pony rides and animal feeding await. Both of these are around half an hour away.
