General

  • Modern site with spectacular mountain views
  • Sauna and fitness room use included in rate
  • Wine bar and restaurant

Ladies and gentlemen, to your left, a mountain view. To your right, a mountain view. And directly ahead (yes, you guessed it), a mountain view. Indeed, Alpine peaks provide the backdrop all around Camping Resort Zugspitze, giving it absolutely cracking views from just about wherever you pitch yourselves. (Don’t try to take them all in at once or you’ll get dizzy.)

The big daddy around here is the one the resort is named after – the Zugspitze, at 2,962 metres the highest peak in Germany. It towers over the site and the nearest village of Grainau, a 10-minute drive away and a good place to pick up food at the supermarket or bakery, or eat in one of the cosy cafés or restaurants.

While you’re busy gawping at the gorgeous landscapes around you, kids with less tolerance for scenery can be entertained at the on-site playground or head over to the games room that’s been set up in a cute little Alpine hut.

Meanwhile, you can plonk yourselves down with a drink on the bistro terrace – it’s handily located just next to the playground so you can keep one eye on small-person antics. Peruse the menu of hot drinks, cakes and assorted tipples, or settle in for a full meal in high season. There’s also a big breakfast buffet here to tuck into every day (extra charge applies), or you can have your fresh bread order delivered ready for morning feasting.

Whatever the season, you’re likely to be spending much time getting active around here – hiking, cycling, watersports, skiing and heaps more are nearby. Upon returning to site you can soothe any aches and pains you’ve picked up along the way at the sauna or spa, or have a massage in the wellness area. Truly dedicated gym bunnies (or those who feel the need to atone for all those cakes in the bistro), can expend further energy at the well-equipped fitness room.

On top of all this, the site takes pride in its spankingly clean toilet and shower facilities – previous guests have raved about them, with one visitor declaring them to be ‘the cleanest and best camping bathrooms ever experienced’. Accessible facilities and baby bathrooms are available, as is a launderette with washing machines and tumble dryers.

And it’s not just humanfolk being treated to such fab facilities – if you’re travelling with a canine chum there’s a dedicated dog-walking area with a shower for pooch pampering (or just to hose down a mucky pup).

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Electricity is metered on site at €0.70kWh and must be paid on departure.

Local attractions

The mountains and meadows around Grainau have much to entice all categories of walker, from casual strollers to sure-footed climbing types. More than 100 kilometres of trails run close to the village; pop into the local tourist info office to acquire a booklet detailing more than 40 marked routes taking in sights such as the Eibsee and Badersee lakes or the Partnachklamm gorge.

Among the other ways to get active are kayaking, rafting and canoeing on the river Loisach from Werdenfels, 20 minutes away – world champs have been held here before so you know you’re in for a good ride. Further watery fun can be had at the Zugspitzbad aquatic centre in Grainau itself – head over here for indoor and outdoor pools, a kids’ pool, waterslide and hot tub.

Club-wielders rejoice, for you have 19 golf courses to choose from within an hour’s drive, both in Germany and across the nearby border in Austria. Be aware, they’re not ideal for the easily distracted – the nearest clubs, Land-und-Golfclub Werdenfels and Golf-Club Garmisch-Partenkirchen, have more of those dazzling mountain views as you tee off.

It’s practically impossible to ignore the Zugspitze mountain itself, of course. If you’re not quite up for the hike to the top (and few are), take the cog-wheel train from Grainau to beaut Eibsee Lake, and then hop on the cable car up to 2,600 metres. A further network of cable cars runs around the glacier at the top to give you access to walking trails and heaps of snap-worthy views.

In winter most thoughts turn to snow sports – downhill skiers can choose to ski Zugspitze itself or nearby Garmisch-Classic; all in all, over 65 kilometres of well-kept pistes within a 10-minute drive. For further snowy activity, choose from 16 kilometres of cross-country routes, toboggan runs, snowshoeing tours and Bavarian curling at Grainau’s central ice rink.
