  • Near outdoor activities in the Bauges Massif Regional Natural Park
Settle down for lakeside stays, beach times and spa days at Camping du Lac de Carouge, a serene site a kilometre from Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny and about half an hour's drive from Chambéry and Albertville. As you might expect from the name, the site's on the shore of Carouge lake, a peaceful place with quiet paths for lakeside walks, fishing areas, a sandy and a pebble beach, pedalo rental and supervised swimming in summer. It's all set on the edge of the Bauges Massif Regional Natural Park, within driving distance of Rhône-Alpes spa towns like Aix les Bain, Challes-les-Eaux and Allevard. The team here sort activities for kids and teens in the summer, along with family-friendly evening events such as film nights. You can also thoroughly investigate the cuisine of the region at the bar-restaurant, which serves a good range of traditional Savoyard dishes. Leisure facilities include a playground, pétanque court, volleyball court, table tennis and an area for football and basketball. There's a mini market, selling essentials and local produce including fresh bread. A free public pool is a 10-minute walk away.

What customers say

This campsite boasts an excellent lakeside location with beautiful mountain views, offering spacious and private pitches. While some guests found the grounds unkempt with hedge cuttings left out, others noted improvements. Toilet blocks are praised for their cleanliness, and facilities are generally considered good, with hot showers available. The on-site bar is small but adequate. Proximity to a road and railway line means some noise is present, but many find it not problematic. WiFi is an additional charge.

Non-electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked The surroundings are a nature lovers delight. Beautiful sunsets around the mountains surrounding the lake. The sanitation buildings are adequate and well maintained. Most of the other pitches looked grassy and were surrounded by neat hedges and some trees. A walk around the lake is an absolute must. The cafe looked good all though I didn’t need it.

Disliked The pitch i was allocated was dire. A patch of earth right next to the sanitation block. I was told it was the last one left, and it was very busy due to Tour de France. However when I asked why better plots were allocated to guests who arrived after me , I was told that’s because they booked directly with the campsite and not pitchup. Apparently pitchup offered a ‘privilege’ at only a few more euros that I should have realised was the best option tomguaranntee a grassy pitch, and that I should have stated a preference not to be allocated a camp next to the WCs!!! I did offer to pay for an upgrade but was refused. Apparently the fee that Pitchup charges per booking means that my custom was not as worthy as those who booked direct with the campsite. I felt quite humiliated but had to accept the situation because my payment had been taken. I would have been better off parking up in the car parking area by the lake for free. I would advise anyone booking to go for the privilege option. It wasn’t clear on WhatsApp site what this was for, as all the photos are the same, but now I know and won’t ever return due to the attitude of the owner.

Electric grass pitch (privilege, water hook-up)

Liked Cleanliness of toilet block

Disliked State of the site and the pitches had just been scraped level and little grass. Hedge cuttings left in piles on pitch to rot.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Spacious pitches with privacy. Great proximity to the lake and lakeside bar/restaurant . Walked all around lake and had a swim. Beautiful view of the nearby mountains whilst swimming. Didn’t use facilities on our one night stop but hubby said ok but basic. Peaceful site with bird song. Can hear train but not a problem for us. Great base before the Frejus tunnel next day.

Disliked Grounds appeared a little unkempt, but we did see someone doing a great job of cutting the hedges back so maybe if we’d arrived a day or two later, impression could be different.

Electric grass pitch (privilege, water hook-up)

Liked Great site with all the facilities you need. It’s quite close to a road/railway line so there’s some noise from that, but it’s also right by a lovely lake so overall a good location.

Local attractions

Hiking, climbing, caving, horse riding and mountain biking are all available in the Bauges Massif Regional Natural Park if you're feeing active; if not, have a sightseeing sojourn to the chilling Château de Miolans, a fortress prison so notorious it was nicknamed the Bastille of the Alps. The fortress is privately owned these days, but tours are available. Much more peacefully, check out the spa towns of the Alps within easy driving distance, including Challes-les-Eaux (15 kilometres) and Allevard (20 kilometres), or have a potter around excellent Chambéry, the former capital of the Dukes of Savoy, 20 kilometres away. Getting active again, spectacular Bourget lake, a favoured haunt of French arty sorts and writers, is within a 25-kilometre drive. Take to its waters for swimming, sailing and waterskiing, before a dip into the waters of Aix les Bain, the famed spa town on the lake shore.
