Grass pitches

  • Peaceful alpine campsite 15 minutes’ walk from Beaufort in Savoie
  • Beaufortain Massif 20 minutes’ walk; Arêches 10 minutes’ drive
  • Grass pitches with mountain views; bread delivery; sports facilities
When it’s time to spend time in peaceful mountain countryside, surrounded by trees and far from everyday cares, it’s time to head for Camping Onlycamp Domelin. Hidden away in the foothills of Savoie, the site accepts caravans, motorhomes and tents, and is about 15 minutes’ walk from the lively alpine village of Beaufort. Tree-shaded grass pitches all have a spectacular backdrop of forested slopes, and are in pole position for all sorts of outdoor activities like hiking (dogs are welcome to join your adventures by the way), fishing, kayaking on the River Doron de Beaufort and mountain biking. If you need inspiration or advice on where to go and what to do, just ask at reception – they’ll be able to help you out – and if you’re happy to kick back on site instead, there’s a playground for younger kids, as well as ping-pong tables and a volleyball court to keep all the family busy. As far as food goes, fresh bread and croissants are available every morning (in high season) from reception, and you can throw food on the grill (bring your own barbecue) for family meals to be enjoyed alfresco. Stock up on local produce in the bakeries and supermarkets of Beaufort – where you’ll also find bars and restaurants when a change of scenery is called for.

Local attractions

It’s all of 20 minutes’ walk from fine biking and hiking terrain in the spectacular Beaufortain Massif, where trails meander through flower-filled alpine meadows to sparkling high-altitude lakes. Reach the isolated Barrage de Saint-Guérin dam in about 40 minutes by cycle, or if you’re an experienced mountain biker, head up the steep Montée du Col du Pré (40 minutes) for glimpses of snow-capped Mont Blanc. You can also see Mont Blanc from the hardcore via ferrata climbing course at Roc du Vent (20 minutes’ drive), where arduous trails lead through tunnels and caves; for something a little less intimidating, involve the kids in alfresco escape-and-tracking challenges at Mountain Games (five minutes). Learn all about local flora and fauna on self-guided strolls through the woodland at Arboretum de Villard sur Doron (five minutes), or taste regional mountain cheeses made by small producers and sold at Beaufort Fromage (both five minutes’ drive). If you fancy a scenic mountain tour, take in the pretty villages of Arêches (10 minutes) and Hauteluce (15 minutes), each packed by wooden chalets and ornate churches with bell-shaped spires.
