  • Peaceful family-friendly site on the banks of Lac des Hurongues
  • Less than an hour's drive from the museums of Lyon and Saint-Étienne
  • Swimming pool, tennis court, trampoline and fishing lake
How’s this for a lovely bit of lakeside loafing? Peaceful Rhône-Alpes site Camping d'Hurongues is in the woods near Pomeys and bordering Lac des Hurongues, a most pleasing spot for walks, fishing… or just whiling away the hours in watery contemplation… Should you feel the need for a dip, you’ll have to restrain yourself from diving into the lake, as that’s reserved for the fish. But panic not, for there’s an alternative in the form of a sizeable swimming pool, flanked by a grassy terrace for drying off in the sun. Away from the water there’s a tennis court, pétanque court and playground (with bouncy castle and trampoline to tire out your little jumping beans). Sustenance on site can be acquired at the snack bar (to have on the terrace or take away), or cooked up over coals on your barbecue. There may be a chance to join fellow guests for theme meals in high season, or you can hit the restaurants, cafés and bakeries of the nearest town, Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise, with a drive of about five minutes. As for activities, it’s up to you whether you keep it rural, filling your days with hiking, mountain biking and treetop adventures, or go urban around the museums and shops of Saint-Étienne or Lyon, both of which are less than an hour’s drive away.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: The swimming pool was a big hit the kids had fun.

Disliked: It was too quiet for us and everything closed too early. By 7pm everything was shut. The pitch was a lot quite uneven.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Friendly man - Richard who welcomed us. It was only a one nighter for us as we’re traveling south, so did the job. Unfortunately the restaurant wasn’t open, but fine for us for a night.

Local attractions

If you’re one of those folks fascinated by making things, take a trip to the Maison des Métiers in Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise, to see the tools and processes used by artisans of yore. This area was once famed for its felt products, some of which you can now see displayed in the hat museum, 10 minutes away in Chazelles-sur-Lyon. There’s more for design lovers at the Cité du Design, 40 minutes away in Saint-Étienne; the city’s also got a great planetarium and contemporary art museum, and there’s a collection of buildings by the famed modernist Le Corbusier a few minutes out of town in Firminy. It’s worth dedicating a day to Lyon too – drive for an hour to get to the museums and Old Town or eat your way round the city’s many foodie treats. Steer away from city life and stick closer to home for alfresco activities: the folk on site can advise on hikes and bike rides locally; a couple of golf courses and tree climbing parks are also within a half-hour drive. Medieval antics and demos for your would-be knights can be had at the Salva Terra living museum, 25 minutes away.
