  • Peaceful dog-friendly site 10 minutes’ walk from Lac de Nantua
  • Access the Jura Mountains Regional Natural Park from 15 minutes’ drive
  • Tennis court and play area; shops and restaurants a short walk away
Set between a glacial lake and the foothills of the Jura mountains, Camping du Signal is certainly not short on natural scenery. Peaceful dog-friendly breaks await at this wildlife haven between forested slopes and Lac de Nantua, whose shores are just 10 minutes’ walk away and host activities from fishing and swimming to sailing and pedalo boating. There’s supervised swimming at the lake in July and August – good news for those who are heading here on a family getaway. Dogs are also welcome on site, and they’re sure to appreciate the tons of walks in the Jura Mountains Regional Natural Park, which can be accessed within 15 minutes’ drive of the site. If you’d like to stick a little closer to home, there’s a football field across the road, a local stadium a few minutes’ walk away and a sailing club by the water. For any days where you’re after a little light-hearted entertainment or some history, there’s a cinema five minutes’ walk away for the former and a war museum 10 minutes’ walk away for the latter. You might also work up a sweat in the site’s tennis court or have a bit of a rest while the kids hit the play area. Craving bistro cuisine like steak frites or croque monsieur? Nantua has plenty of restaurants within walking distance of the site. There are shops too for those who’d like to gather a selection of snacks for their hikes and days by the water. In terms of practical facilities, Camping du Signal's spacious pitches also have access to toilets accessible to any guests with reduced mobility.

Local attractions

Head to Dinoplagne® (20 minutes’ drive) to pore over one of the longest trails of titanosaur footprints in existence, or set out to leave plenty of (smaller-sized) footprints of your own over the hiking trails in the gorgeous Vallée de l'Ain (35 minutes), a river valley packed with wildlife and hosting a watersports centre. There are more natural places nearby that will help you to reminisce over older times. The Ruines Chartreuse de Meyriat (25 minutes) was once a grand monastery and the Fort l'Écluse (40 minutes) was built into the side of a mountain in the 17th and 18th centuries. Another interesting trip (back in time and into an underground landscape) is the Cerdon caves - Prehistoric Amusement Park (20 minutes). To get to the cave, you’ll need to board a train and go on a small woodland trek. There are views of vineyards and caves once inhabited by prehistoric people. The amusement park also holds pottery and archaeology demonstrations.

Electric grass pitch (groups only)

Liked: Wonderful experience thanks to the Manager, Madame Mireille who constantly surveyed the camping site to ensure all was well. Any issue was handled immediately and checked the issue was sorted. Our dog Teddy was given a great welcome and enjoyed his many long walks in nature. We look forward to returning next year.

Electric grass pitch (groups only)

Liked: This is an older municipal site which has a local authority improvement programme. The facilities are old but not dirty or unsanitary in any way. The showers are old fashioned. Madame Mireille, the manager, indeed doesn't speak English. I speak a small amount of French and she gave me time to work out what to say. She was always helpful and polite. The lake is 10 mins walk away and is amazing. Small coffee / snack stands dot around the edge so you can get a cool can when you want. Water is clear and a refreshing distraction to the heat of the day. Pitches are scruffy but level, hedge lined and spacious. They have updated the Motorhome service point which is excellent and if this is the level they are aiming at for the rest of the improvements then this will be an exceptional site.

Electric grass pitch (groups only)

Liked: The scenery around the site was incredible.

Disliked: The site was scruffy, the pitches were flat but hedges were overgrown with brambles, nettles and knotweed. The toilets were an absolute disgrace. Shared facilities without doors, squatting toilets and not clean. There is a notice that the city is aware of the state of the facilities and will be updating for 2024. Pitchup should share this information before accepting bookings.

Electric grass pitch (groups only)

Liked: not much!

Disliked: The manager was so rude I had to ask her to stop shouting at me. She didn’t speak any English at all and I have very little French (which is my problem not hers) but she was very impatient and unhelpful. We had booked for two nights but only stayed for one. The facilities were pretty disgusting!

Liked: The lake nearby is stunning, people in the local shops are very friendly

Disliked: Despite what it says the lady doesn't speak a word of English but that's by the by she is rude , she overcharges even though you pay beforehand she will say pitch up is wrong, she shouts at kids for playing ( French and English kids ) we paid for 4 nights and left after 2 never felt so uncomfortable at a campsite

Electric grass pitch (groups only)

Liked: Electricity and water available. Level pitches separated by small hedges. Walking distance to town centre and restaurants. Inexpensive.

Disliked: Shower and toilet facilities need to be upgraded. Receptionist could not speak any English (my fault, I should speak the native language). No shop on site.

Electric grass pitch (groups only)

Liked: Location, price, friendly quiet.

Disliked: Not really a gripe but the barrier doesn't sense if you are riding a motorcycle. And took 15 mins to find someone to activate it .
