  • Peaceful dog-friendly site 10 minutes’ walk from Lac de Nantua
  • Access the Jura Mountains Regional Natural Park from 15 minutes’ drive
  • Play area, tennis court, table tennis and other activities
Set between a glacial lake and the foothills of the Jura mountains, Camping du Signal is certainly not short on natural scenery. Peaceful, dog-friendly breaks await at this wildlife haven between forested slopes and Lac de Nantua, whose shores are just 10 minutes’ walk away and host activities from fishing and swimming to sailing and pedalo boating. There’s supervised swimming at the lake in July and August – good news for those who are heading here on a family getaway. Dogs are also welcome on site, and they’re sure to appreciate the tons of walks in the Jura Mountains Regional Natural Park, which can be accessed within 15 minutes’ drive of the site. If you’d like to stick a little closer to home, there’s a football field across the road, a local stadium a few minutes’ walk away and a sailing club by the water. For any days where you’re after a little light-hearted entertainment or some history, there’s a cinema five minutes’ walk away for the former and a war museum 10 minutes’ walk away for the latter. You might also work up a sweat on the site’s tennis court or have a bit of a rest while the kids hit the play area or the ping pong table. Craving bistro cuisine like steak frites or croque monsieur? Nantua has plenty of restaurants within walking distance of the site. There are shops too for those who’d like to gather a selection of snacks for their hikes and days by the water. If you're visiting during high season, you also get to look forward to visiting the on-site guinguette (a tavern-style venue) and snack bar; there's also a food truck open every Tuesday and Friday in July and August. In terms of practical facilities, Camping du Signal's spacious pitches also have access to toilets accessible to any guests with reduced mobility.

Local attractions

Head to Dinoplagne® (20 minutes’ drive) to pore over one of the longest trails of titanosaur footprints in existence, or set out to leave plenty of (smaller-sized) footprints of your own over the hiking trails in the gorgeous Vallée de l'Ain (35 minutes), a river valley packed with wildlife and hosting a watersports centre. There are more natural places nearby that will help you to reminisce over older times. The Ruines Chartreuse de Meyriat (25 minutes) was once a grand monastery and the Fort l'Écluse (40 minutes) was built into the side of a mountain in the 17th and 18th centuries. Another interesting trip (back in time and into an underground landscape) is the Cerdon caves - Prehistoric Amusement Park (20 minutes). To get to the cave, you’ll need to board a train and go on a small woodland trek. There are views of vineyards and caves once inhabited by prehistoric people. The amusement park also holds pottery and archaeology demonstrations.

What customers say

This campsite benefits from a stunning location with a beautiful lake a short walk away and incredible valley scenery. Pitches are spacious and level. While some guests found the manager very helpful and attentive, others reported her as rude and unhelpful, with language barriers contributing to negative experiences. Facilities are described as dated and in need of modernisation by some, with others finding them clean and adequate.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Decent size pitch. Less than 10 minutes walk from the beautiful lake. Very reasonable price and cheaper than Pitchup quoted. Ablutions are comprehensive, though basic. Friendly and helpful staff.

Disliked Barely warm water and very poor water pressure. The approach to the site is off-putting; thankfully, the site is better inside than out, though a bit shabby.
Pitchup charged a deposit, which the campsite claimed it did not receive and ‘wasn’t normal’ practice. No WiFi signal from the site WiFi….

Electric grass pitch (groups only)

Liked Location, great view of the side of the mountain and 10 mins walk to the lake.

Disliked Staff where abrupt. The facilities where not even 1 star, run down and in need of modernisation, lacked cleaning and didn't feel safe the children.
