  • Peaceful and relaxing site on the shore of spectacular Paladru lake
  • Watersports, cycling, fishing and hikes all easily accessible
  • Playground, games room, barbecues, free wifi and activities

Watery peace on the shores of a splendidly pretty blue lake (do see pics), spectacular views of said lake from each and every pitch, and kayaking, fishing, sailing and ambling all around… what a relaxing time will be had at Camping le Calatrin.

The lush surrounding lake is Paladru in the Isère department of the Rhône-Alps, the fifth biggest natural lake in la France and a prime spot for watersports, cycling and summer swimming. More of the same can be had all around the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park, about 21 kilometres from the lake's eponymous town of Paladru.

Camping le Calatrin is a big, laidback and family-friendly site with the aim of making guests' stays as easy and relaxing as possible: fresh bread can be delivered to your pitch every morning on request, barbecues are all set up for guests' use, and kids have plenty to keep them busy at the playground, ping pong table and games room. Sports and cultural activities are run for all ages by the friendly site team and welcome drinks are offered on arrival.

The site also has a laundry, toilets and showers and a parent and baby washroom. There's free wifi throughout.

Location next to the lake was brilliant. Flat pitches. Friendly staff who spoke English and they came around each pitch to ask whether you wanted bread the next day and they organised a welcome drink on the Sunday. They had walking maps for the area which you could borrow. Facilities were clean and worked fine.

Free wifi was restricted to 10 metre from the reception when Pitchup said that it was overall coverage. It seems that they have used hotspots before as you could see them available but they weren't using them. The wifi was one of the reasons why we booked that site and we would have stayed longer if they had sorted this out.

Local attractions

To the lake first: Camping le Calatrin is right on the shores of the glacial blue lake of Paladru, a place of many outdoor activities including watersports and fishing. Kayaks, paddle boats and paddleboards can be hired 200 metres from the site; if you're more avid about angling, you can pick up a permit from the reception team.

For wanders, plentiful hiking paths around the lake will take you to different viewpoints over the water and the Isère department; a bike path is also around if you prefer to cruise about on two wheels, and horse riding is available too for those who want to canter. A treetop adventure park is a few kilometres from the site if you'd rather swing between branches.

Cultured types can get along to the big exhibition space and tastings of the Cellar and Distillery of the Grande Chartreuse in Voiron; the archaeological museum in Charavines and the Château de Virieu, built in the fifteenth century and now an official French monument.
