  • Lively family campsite by the Drôme river in Rhône-Alpes countryside
  • Aquarium des Tropiques half an hour’s drive; 45 minutes to Cliousclat
  • Sports field and heated pools; snack bar and takeaways in high season
Edging the Drôme river in almost 10 acres of tree-dotted Rhône-Alpes countryside, Camping Onlycamp Les Tuillères is a tip-top family site with so much going on that you’ll probably barely see the kids. Where to start with all those sports facilities? How about the heated swimming pools? Swim laps of the main pool, or keep an eye on younger kids in the paddling pool from the sundeck with parasols and loungers. Regular activities also take place in the pool – sign up for canoeing tuition or exercise classes. There’s an expansive playing field with goal posts for two football pitches, plus space for volleyball, netball and badminton… along with ping pong tables and a pétanque court. You'll just need to remember to bring sports equipment with you. In July and August, there’s even more action. As well as advising on sightseeing and local hikes, reception staff can help organise climbing, horse riding, tennis instruction and circus acrobatics – if that all sounds like too much effort (this is your holiday, after all), try pottery classes or take guided walks to try and spot beavers, vultures and marmots. With direct access to the Drôme from the grass pitches, you can sunbathe on river beaches, paddle downstream in a kayak (or go canyoning if you’re after an adrenaline rush), and fish for brown trout or barbel. Back on site, facilities designed to make life easy for families include the day-long sale of snacks and drinks, plus takeaway pizzas, sausages and fries in the evening. Keen to get barbecuing? Vercheny (five minutes’ drive) has a small supermarket for grilling essentials.

Local attractions

Hardened hikers can pick up itineraries from reception for walks amid the alpine meadows, forests and valleys of the unspoilt Pays Diois region, or walk the 25 minutes up to the Chute de la Druise Waterfall (40 minutes’ drive to the car park), tumbling down a sheer cliff. You can also scale rugged Dôme du Glandasse (50 minutes) for views of undulating Diois hills. Water babies can float down the spectacular Roanne River Gorges between Saint-Benoit-en-Diois (10 minutes) and Saint-Nazaire-le-Désert (half an hour), or navigate the steep side of Canyon des Gueulards (55 minutes) to dive into the pool below Cascade de de Chatelat (50 minutes’ walk). For more restful days out with the kids, call in on the flamingos, macaws and albino peacocks at Zoo Upie (35 minutes’ drive), or the brightly coloured tropical fish and rays at the Aquarium des Tropiques (half an hour). And when you’ve had your fill of wildlife, pay a visit to hilltop Cliousclat (45 minutes) to watch potters making the village’s traditional glazed ceramics.
