  • Dog-friendly site with two beaches and a canoe base on the river Drôme
  • A five-minute drive from Saillans; half an hour from the Roanne Valley
  • Bar, restaurant, bakery, shop, playgrounds and kids’ club on site
There’s no need for any artificial pools at Camping Les Acacias, when there already are two natural sand-pebble beaches courtesy of the gorgeous, alpine-blue Drôme river. With a canoe base, this small forest site has a friendly spirit and a relaxing vibe (when you’re not paddling downstream, that is). The soundtrack? Expect birdsong, the running of the river, the clicking of cicadas and kids playing in the shallows or on the two playgrounds. After all those paddles in the Drôme, you’ll probably be pleased that the site has plenty of places to grab a bite to eat. There’s a bar, restaurant, bakery, a grocery shop and a sandwich shop. The site’s canoeing base will drop you upstream or you’re welcome to paddle downstream from the site and get picked up. If any kids need any extra entertainment, there’s a free kids’ club. Otherwise, just introduce them to the wider Auvergne-Rhone-Alps region, where there are activities like skiing, cycling, mountain biking, scootering, hiking, fishing, canoeing, archery, gliding and horse, donkey or carriage rides. The site’s based in the Drôme Valley in the mountainous pre-Alps, so hikes, swims, canoeing and other watersports are thoroughly scenic. It’s also two hours’ drive away from Lyon, an hour and 40 minutes from Grenoble and 50 minutes from Valence. Closer by, there’s paddleboarding and wakeboarding available in Vercheny (10 minutes’ drive) and more hiking and watersports in Saillans (five minutes), a pretty little village on the river Drôme. The medieval Crest (20 minutes), the Roman Die (15 minutes) and the Roanne Valley (from around half an hour’s drive) are also at your disposal.

Liked: Everything! This is a true gem of a campsite - we will definitely be returning next year. We loved it so much this year we booked additional nights. The camp site is based on the river with direct access and canoe hire complete with drop off/pick up if you need it. The temperatures are great for our dogs and we are able to get a good nights sleep with them. Interestingly, we have found significantly less biting mosquitoes here than other places, something we didn’t expect as it it’s right on the river, excellent news for everyone! The facilities are excellent, offering the usuals plus bar, restaurant, shop, facilities to launder clothes. The food we have had has been excellent and you are able to place orders of breakfast and reservations for lunches. The views on the river are spectacular, the people working at the site are wonderfully helpful and kind (we were stuck in a mammoth delay and ended up being 4hrs late arriving) the kind lady checked us in and showed us to our pitch. Security on the site is good and I think they plan where your pitch will be according to your party. It is a large site with plenty of facilities for children as well - having said that - we didn’t hear any children around our pitch, maybe they placed them closer to the playground. (Which is a win for us!) This site is exactly what we wanted and more, you couldn’t ask for a more well equipped, tranquil and relaxed dog friendly site, it’s probably the best site we’ve ever been to!

Local attractions

What’s on the agenda? Plenty of relaxation and adventure, it seems… the site is in a central spot for visiting the Diois, the Vercors Massif and the Drôme Provençale, where there are mountains, rivers and other very scenic spots. You might go hiking in the Les 3 Becs (an hour and five minutes) mountains, the Réserve naturelle nationale des Ramières du Val de Drôme (35 minutes) or to the waterfall Chute de la Druise (40 minutes). Cyclists very much like the mountain pass Col de Rousset (40 minutes), while climbers all gather at the huge rockslide of the Saut de la Drôme (40 minutes). Other top spots for outdoor expeditions of all sorts include Forêt de Saou (half an hour), Gorges d'Omblèze (40 minutes), Canyon des Gueulards (55 minutes) and Aire de Fomoranche (five minutes). Just ask the site to point you towards more gorges, mountains and other curious natural spots. Those with kids tagging along are also likely to like the Acro Pole Adventure (50 minutes), where there are activities like tree climbing, canyoning and climbing.
