Dreaming of peaceful hols in the great wide open? Settle in for a peaceful stay at Camping Satillieu, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the village of Satillieu in the Rhône-Alpes region. This is the Ardèche, so expecting lots of greenery, hikes, bikes and pretty little villages wouldn’t be far from the mark... and there’s plenty of all four nearby: Camping Satillieu is shaded with lots of trees, and is in a forested area roughly halfway between the Pilat and Monts d’Ardèche regional natural parks. The site's no slouch in the prettiness department either: it’s on the banks of the L’Ay – take note fishing fans – so the shaded pitches and stands of trees are made all the more soothing by the sounds of water tumbling past and the calls of birds overhead. Just what’s needed while settling in (with welcome drink in hand)… All sounding too quiet? Step away from riverside lounging and opt instead for pétanque or afternoons in the games room, or toddle along to the restaurant and snack bar for a panini or burger – there's more traditional French fare like frogs' legs and fried mussels too – and a beer with fellow guests. Things get even livelier on Saturday nights, so claim a spot for the concerts and shows and get ready to pile plates high at the buffet.

Local attractions

Not done with nature just yet? See it from a different perspective 40 minutes’ drive away on the vélorail along the Gorges du Doux (there are two different routes to choose from) or head instead to the 35-kilometre Dolce Via walking and biking route starting 45 minutes from base in Lamastre. If you prefer to see all the splendour under someone else’s steam, sit back and chug along the Gorges du Doux on the Train de l’Ardèche steam train, 35 minutes from the site – or have a leisurely explore of a different kind by bringing animals into the mix at Safari de Peaugres, half an hour away. For bittersweet days, let Valrhona’s City of Chocolate melt away any remaining stress: a 40-minute drive from home base, there are tours, a chocolate waterfall and up to 20 different tastings here. A very different option is a trip to the Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval, a spectacular and surreal palace a little under an hour away, built by a postman over the course of 30 years. If city days are beckoning, the museums, gardens and castle of Valence are an hour away, and Lyon’s Old Town, Roman remains and aquarium are within 80 minutes.
