  • Family-friendly Rhône-Alpes site at Aubenas on the Ardèche River
  • 35 minutes’ drive to Vallon-Pont-d’Arc; 40 minutes to Grotte Chauvet 2
  • Swimming pool and river beach; restaurant and entertainment in summer
With a blissful setting on the Ardèche River, Le Verger de Jastres has a chilled, family-friendly vibe and various accommodation options tucked under the cooling shade of its lush tree canopy. The site is also handily close to shops, markets and restaurants in medieval Aubenas (10 minutes’ drive to the town centre), and in pole position for exploring the stunning Rhône-Alpes region, with forested hiking trails, spectacular natural attractions and photogenic villages all within half an hour’s drive. If you’d rather stick around on site, there’s never a dull moment to be had. Head down to the river beach for wild swimming and kayaking, or to try your hand at fishing for grayling and chub. Alternatively, you can join in with water-polo tournaments at the outdoor pool, play table football in the games room, or sign up for the weekly pétanque, archery and multisports tournaments… In short there’s always something laid on to keep you busy – and if you feel in need of a pick-me-up, massages and reflexology treatments are on hand (for an extra cost) too. The site’s snack bar/pizzeria has a sun-trap terrace and transforms into a full restaurant during the July and August holidays, when fresh bread and pastries are available daily by prior order from reception. Summer also sees evening entertainment (think concerts, dance parties or karaoke) taking place in the bar.

Local attractions

Your biggest decision when sightseeing in the Ardèche? Where to start. Gorgeous medieval Aubenas (10 minutes’ drive) is a good decision, with its mighty hilltop castle and Gothic-style townhouses. Other characterful villages in the region include Balazuc (25 minutes) and Ruoms (half an hour), both with medieval houses clinging to the Ardèche riverside. The region is also well-known for its historic sights; maybe witness the replica prehistoric cave paintings of bison and mammoths at Grotte Chauvet 2 - Ardèche (40 minutes), and then carry on to see the outlines of a Gallo-Roman amphitheatre and grand villas at the Alba la Romaine archaeological site (20 minutes). The Oppidum de Jastres (10 minutes) is another ancient Roman relic, this time with superb views over the Ardèche valley. Of course, the Ardèche is an outdoor playground too, so you can look forward to canoeing or kayaking underneath the natural Vallon-Pont-d’Arc bridge (35 minutes) as it sweeps across the river. Elsewhere in the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Natural Park (10 minutes), you can attempt a via ferrata climbing route near the Pont du Diable, or adrenaline-fuelled canyoning and whitewater rafting down the Besorgues ravine (both half an hour).
