  • Family camping five minutes’ drive from Ribes in the southern Ardèche
  • Pont d’Arc 45 minutes’ drive; 50 minutes to Grotte Chauvet 2 Ardèche
  • Wooden camping pods, heated swimming pool, sports field and play area
A sunny Mediterranean climate and stays in handcrafted ‘burons’ – which look for all the world like inverted wooden boats – are just two reasons for staying at Le Hameau du Prat, five minutes’ drive from Ribes in the southern Ardèche. This family-friendly site is also less than five minutes’ stroll from the banks of La Baume and Alune rivers, has its own heated swimming pool and in summer, there’s all sorts going on to keep everyone happily entertained. But first, those buron camping pods. All with air con, each is nattily done out with double and bunk beds, an ensuite bathroom, a spacious living area and well-equipped kitchenette. Moving outside, you can gather for family meals on your decking and laze under the sun in your garden, shaded by trees and bordered by hedges for privacy. And now to what’s occurring around the site… Attend to your well-being with yoga classes and Ayurvedic massages, take a dip in the pool or challenge the kids to some gentle action on the sports field. Younger offspring may like to jump around on the trampoline and join organised daily activities (between July 6 and August 24). Down on the banks of La Baume River, swim, sunbathe or dare each other to jump into the river from the rocks, and sign up for guided canoe trips every Tuesday morning. Come evening, look forward to lively themed nights at the bar – and don’t forget to order your morning delivery of bread and pastries from the regional on-site baker.

Local attractions

Admire the mighty Pont d’Arc (45 minutes’ drive), a natural bridge spanning the River Ardèche, and marvel at the limestone formations deep underground in the Grotte de la Madeleine (an hour and five minutes). For more subterranean adventures, tour the Grotte de la Salamandre (55 minutes) to see eons-old stalactites before taking to the skies on hot-air balloon trips over the dramatic Ardèche Gorge. Step back in time among replica prehistoric cave drawings of lions, bears and mammoths at Grotte Chauvet 2 Ardèche (50 minutes), where you can also watch the spectacular 4D ANIMAL light show. To see wildlife for real, pay a visit to the rare Auroch cattle herd at Parc Animalier des Gorges de l’Ardèche (40 minutes). If the family’s demanding more high-octane escapades, test their mettle on the high ropes at Accrobranche Indy Parc (45 minutes), or the challenging via ferrata climbing course at Accrobranche Adventure Camp (25 minutes). Too hardcore for you? Visit some of France’s prettiest villages, including medieval Balazuc and Vogüé (both half an hour), set deep in the rugged Ardèche Gorge.
