  • Family campsite edging the Ardèche river 10 minutes’ walk from Lanas
  • Half an hour’s walk to the Château de Vogüé and Via Ardèche cycle path
  • Bar-restaurant, swimming pool and boules; walks and kayaking from site
With a stunning setting on ‘faysses’ – traditional Ardèche terraces lined with dry stone walls – leading down to the banks of the Ardèche river, Camping de l’Arche is also surrounded by neat rows of vines and an ancient orchard. Life at this small-scale and cosy family campsite revolves around the water, whether you and the kids choose to splash about in the swimming pool, or head down to the river for a dip off one of the pocket-size beaches. For more adrenaline-inducing pursuits, book at reception for kayak trips or canyoning expeditions through the river gorges. There’s also plenty happening on site as well – kids can wear off any excess energy at the playground and challenge new-found pals to boules or board games. In high season, everyone can join in themed dinners, dance evenings and musical entertainment. A pretty restaurant with a bar terrace looking towards the river has you covered for day-long snacks and evening meals, and bread and pastries can be pre-ordered and be picked up for breakfast in the morning. There are communal grills and picnic tables near reception for dedicated barbecue buffs, and should you want a change of scenery, the medieval village of Lanas (10 minutes’ walk) has a scattering of brasseries and bars. The owners of Camping de l’Arche are proud of their commitment to sustainable tourism and limit the site’s impact on the environment by promoting local products and short food miles, limiting water and energy consumption, and recycling waste.

Local attractions

Camping de l’Arche is set on a way-marked hiking path leading through Lanas village along the Ardèche river to Balazuc (an hour and 10 minutes’ walk), backed by sheer cliffs and listed as ‘one of the most beautiful villages in France’. Anther easy family walk from the campsite leads over the Pont de Vogüé bridge (25 minutes) to the spectacular towers and cobbled alleys of medieval Vogüé (half an hour) village, topped by a landmark 17th-century château, open for art exhibitions and tours of terraced gardens. At Vogüé, cyclists can join the Via Ardèche bike path, which wends its way across the south of the region following the route of the old railway line – a gentle introduction to cycling for the kids as it is pretty level. Don’t have bikes with you? You can rent them from reception. To travel back through the centuries, visit Grotte Chauvet 2 Ardèche (25 minutes’ drive), an underground complex cave with animal dioramas in the Aurignacian Gallery, torchlight tours of replica prehistoric paintings and an immersive 4D art show.
