General

  • In the nature reserve of the Ardèche gorges
  • A 20-minute walk from the Ardèche river via several routes
  • Restaurant, shop, playground and small library

Oh my, what a gorgeous place is this. If you like French valleys, and rivers, and gorges, and wildlife havens… you can see where we're going with this, oui?

Camping Caravaning Mile Etoiles is in a fab holiday spot, overlooking the magnif Ardèche gorges, a place of spectacular scenery, rocky landscapes and scores slashed into the landscape as deep as 300 metres. The Gorges de l'Ardèche is a nature reserve too, so you'll hear hooting owls and other birds, and might be able to spy boars, deer, beavers and the rare Bonelli's eagle – there are a couple of eagley pairs hanging out among the gorges, of only about 30 pairs in the whole of France.

Mille Etoiles is at the end of a quiet track and, as you might have figured from all the above, is a peaceful holiday place for getting into nature and the outdoors. It has direct access to the Ardèche river via several different pathways, all about 20 minutes' walk: take a different one every day to go swimming, go nature spotting or just bask in the valley sunshine…

The campsite has a restaurant, a small shop selling essentials, a playground and laundry facilities. There's also a small library, so pick up un livre and take yourself off out for a gorgeously scenic day.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Facilities/activities including mountain bike rental and the launderette are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Warning: there is no light in the campsite at night; please bring a torch.

We returned to this site after our first stay in 2015, and whart we said then applies still:

Were at first not keen on the idea of camping around Vallon Pont d'Arc, with its multitudes of naff, crowded campsites and canoe-hire businesses and teeming with holidaymakers. However, just a few kilometers downstream of Vallon is an altogether otherworldly place, and it feels a lot more like the depths of rural France with trails through forests and over high country, charming old villages, basic country food and a sense of profound isolation. Camping Mille Etoiles is nestled among all this, on a wooded plateau high above the southern bank of the Ardèche Gorge. It is about 4km off the main road which passes through the nearest village of Labastide de Virac, but the only road noise we heard came from the occasional motorcycle gunning along the gorge road about 2km away on the opposite bank. With high temperatures we were thankful of a campsite which offered plenty of shade, nestled in the scrubby garrigue of mostly evergreen Ardèche oaks.

For a very reasonable outlay, we ended up with all the facilities we would would need without any frippery: a bar and restaurant offering good fare at reasonable prices, an office where basic provisions can be bought and fresh bread delivered daily, a dedicated wood/charcoal barbecue area next to the restaurant (gas BBQs only on camping pitches), plenty of space for kids to play as cars are not allowed on site except to load and unload, bikes and donkeys available for hire, and sufficient loos/showers/sinks/wash-up facilities/washing machine/electric hook-up etc etc.

There is no pool. It is not needed. At the northern end of the camp is the cliff edge of the Gorge (some stunning views) around 200 metres above the Ardèche river, with direct access to it via a sometimes steep 20-minute scramble with small children. The rewards are a quarter-mile stretch of crystal-clear water, slow-flowing, some shallows, deeper pools to indulge in some rock-diving, ample space with some shade to 'beach', and gorgeous views of the canyons in both directions. You have to suffer the twice-daily onslaught of canoe-and-kayak rush-hour, but you can seek solace that you're in far better shape than those poor dehydrated paddlers in their boats sweating under their life jackets. And the peace and quiet when they have passed is all the more sweet.

Yes, there's little grass and the ground is firm, so rock pegs are a sensible choice. But pitches are mostly level and there is a healthy mix of tents, campervans and hikers just passing through on the GR4. I don't know anything about their yurts or safari lodges, although I reckon that fly/Eurostar to Avignon or Nimes + car hire with a couple of suitcases is doable from England. So bring a hammock or two, a good read, do some stargazing, listen to the cicadas, try to get a glimpse of wild boar or coypu snuffling about the brush at night beyond the campsite fence. And relax.

Fantastic site. Amazing location, brilliant chilled out, natural vibe. Access to a stunning and quiet spot of the river as long as you’re happy for a bit of a steep hike down the gorge. We stayed here during the serious floods and although we were fine the hosts were very helpful to anyone who had issues. Basic shower/toilet block which was more than sufficient. Lovely little restaurant on site. Site is very shady -the pitches are set amongst the trees which is perfect during the blazing sunshine of summer. We loved our stay and will definitely be back.

Local attractions

Mountain biking, hiking and swimming all are available close by and within 12 kilometres activity seekers can find canoe and kayak hire, horse riding, donkey trekking, rock climbing and mountaineering.

This is an ancient area filled with ancient caves, a few very famed of which are within an easy drive of the campsite: within 12 kilometres are La Grotte de la Madeleine and the restored La Grotte Chauvet with the earliest known prehistoric cave paintings in the world; and within easy reach are L'Aven d'Orgnac, one of the most visited caves in the Ardèche, and spectacular La Cocalière, among the biggest caves in France.

You should also see the village of Labastide de Virac with its Château de Roures; the markets of Barjac and of Vallon Pont d'Arc, and the big natural bridge of the Pont d'Arc: we highly recommend canoeing underneath it, humming gently and pretending one is on some sort of quest.
