  • Quiet forest campsite five minutes’ walk from the Doux river, Ardèche
  • A 10-minute drive to Boucieu-le-Roi and Vélorail des Gorges du Doux
  • Spacious, dog-friendly grass pitches; shops five minutes’ drive
When all you want is a peaceful green corner of the Ardèche – possibly with the burbling of a river in the background – you may just like the sound of Camping Le Marchand, set among verdant forest and around five minutes’ walk from the Doux river. This cosy family-friendly campsite is located on a former farm, with spacious grass pitches bordered by neat hedges for extra privacy. Shaded pathways lead around the site, where you can keep the kids entertained on the pétanque court and make sure any four-legged friends are thoroughly well walked in the surrounding woodland. Camping Le Marchand is as conveniently located as it is quiet; you can source foodie supplies from the baker and butcher (barbecues are available on site) in the pretty village of Colombier-le-Vieux ( five minutes’ drive). If cooking’s not on the agenda (this is your holiday after all), search out the scattering of no-frills bistros within 15 minutes’ drive. The campsite is also a gateway to hiking and cycling adventures across the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region as well as fishing on the Doux river.

Electric optional grass pitch

Local attractions

Active families can follow the Chemin de Croix du Montbard from Eclassan (25 minutes) up to a tiny pilgrimage chapel, or hike up to the viewpoint at the Tour d’Arras for spectacular views over the Rhône river. For something different, climb aboard the Vélorail des Gorges du Doux (10 minutes) and pedal your way through lush Ardéche landscapes. If energy levels are flagging after all that, drive up to the Col du Buisson (half an hour) to see the whimsical stone-built miniature village, have a ramble around the medieval streets of Boucieu-le-Roi or take a selfie standing on the landmark 15th-century Pont du Roi (both 10 minutes) spanning the Doux river. There’s masses to do if the kids need more distraction too: bouncy castles and gentle slides at Savanna et Cie, or rope trails and trampolines at Ninja Land (both in Valence, 45 minutes). Le Monde de Merlin (40 minutes) makes a handy family day out with water slides, soft play and cafés, while Safari de Peaugres (50 minutes) enchants with zebras, rhinos and big cats in spacious drive-through enclosures.
