  • Quiet site near the Ardèche river and a short drive from Pont d'Arc
  • Horse riding, fishing and climbing spots nearby
  • Pizzeria, snack bar and weekly activities in high season
Peaceful, pretty and near the Ardèche river, this park is set up splendidly for those seeking a good slice of serenity while being within easy reach of outdoorsy options like fishing, canoeing, horse riding and climbing. Heaps of hiking trails run throughout the Ardèche region too, all to be intrepidly explored either on one’s confident own or with expert guidance from a local wandering sort. Camping Les Chênes is on the edge of the village of Chauzon in the southern Ardèche region, with the Ardèche river flowing slowly by 500 metres from base, and an outdoor pool complex at a leisure park an easy peasy amble away: both good close by spots to cool off at. When it comes to your free time on site, pack the small peeps off to the playground and fill one’s boots with leisurely games of pétanque and simple woodland strolls around the grounds; for spells of even less energised downtime, the site is furnished too with free wifi, so catching up on emails, scouring social media and idly exploring the internet are all perfectly poss as well. In peak season a snack bar plus a pizzeria serving delicious homemade pizzas – all put together most pleasingly with locally sourced produce – sort your on-site scoffs, and the friendly site folk organise weekly theme nights and activities.

Local attractions

For days when a cooling splash is required, a splendid swimming spot along the near-flowing Ardèche river is a short stroll from base, and you can be at the Isla Cool Douce river beach for more swims and canoeing/kayaking options within half an hour’s walk. Elsewhere, clambering peeps can try out the routes at nearby Cirque de Gens, while horsey sorts can organise hacks locally too. Surely next to be tackled on the holiday ticklist should be Vallon Pont d'Arc, a short pootle away, for canoe and kayak trips under its giant natural bridge, a marvel at the wondrously well-preserved prehistoric paintings of Chauvet Cave, and aimless wanders around the town’s Thursday market. For more subterranean sightseeing, head swiftly to Aven d'Orgnac. Other spots a short drive from base include the beaut little village of Balazuc, Domaine Eyguebelle distillery in Valaurie (the monk-made liqueurs and elixirs here are outstanding), plus Grignan Castle and Miniature Village. For wildlife spotting options and fab family days out, make tracks for Lussas Wildlife Park and Gorges d'Ardèche nature reserve.
