  • Family campsite five minutes’ drive from Chauzon in the Rhône-Alpes
  • Balazuc 15 minutes’ drive, and 40 minutes to Grotte Chauvet 2
  • Snack bar and swimming pool; direct access to the Ardèche River
Where could you go to canoe along the Ardèche, build sandcastles on the river beach, listen to cicadas sing in the summer and snooze in the sun by the swimming pool? Camping Le Coin Charmant in the Rhône-Alpes, that’s where. There’s plenty more to do as well. The campsite is a springboard to horse riding, canyoning and caving adventures, hiking in the Cirque de Gens (10 minutes’ drive), mountain biking, Via Ferrata climbing routes… And that list could go on – but if all that sounds like too much hard work, siestas are encouraged on the partially shaded pitches, nicely divided from neighbours by leafy hedges. When you’re not busy partaking of adrenaline-inducing sports, the site is a great base for family holidays, with modern shower blocks – that means plenty of hot water for freshening up after a busy day – washing machines to stay on top of the chores and fridge rental to keep your food fresh. Order breakfast bread the night before, and keep hunger attacks away with supplies from the snack bar. When you need to stock up, there are basics shops in Chauzon (five minutes) and a supermarket in Pradons (10 minutes). And if you can keep your eyes open in the evening after all your sporty activity, put your feet up in the bar to watch sporting events on the TV.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: It was a lovely, relaxing setting right beside the river. The pitches were shady enough to keep us cool with 38 degree temperatures. The facilities were well maintained and always clean. The people running the campsite were brilliant: my French is not great and they were so patient, kind, helpful and supportive- nothing was too much for them. There was plenty of advise available if required including a welcome drink; they organised activities on different nights if you wanted to go along- our favourite was the food night on Thursdays (Provençal chicken one week and paella night the next- but they made chicken nuggets and chips for our younger children). They were so friendly and welcoming. The pool was good( our children could both swim, but there was a small pool for younger children/ infants). Some people used the pool areas as a sunbathing area (not our thing) and seemed to spend all day there- we usually went once a day and swam and played in there. The site where we Pitched was well maintained and there was a lot of room. We had a large tent and car parked but there was still a lot more space to eat and play. The area was perfectly located to visit various old towns like Balazuc and Vogüé or newer, bigger ones. And it was very easy to get to places like the caves for visits as well. Overall, this really was a wonderful find and perfect for families or couples. We stayed for two weeks and didn’t have any complaints or problems.

Disliked: Nothing! We had a great time.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: It’s a quiet well-run site with clean, if limited , facilities . The tent pitch was very generous indeed and was flat, grassy and partially shaded. There is no shop as such on the site but the daily supply of fresh bread and croissants, ordered the day before proved most welcome . The restaurant serves until 9.30 , although the choice of food is very basic and the bar is open until 23.30 We liked the proximity to the river .

Disliked: There were not enough toilets in the bloc sanitaire - just two adult ones plus a urinal and a child’s toilets . Quite often the toilet paper had run out first thing in the morning . Toilets and showers are unisex. The WiFi in the bar/ restaurant area proved very unreliable .

From the manager: Good morning, Thank you very much for your feedback and for taking the time to do so. We are very happy that your stay is appreciated. Its very important for us. Concerning the sanitary block, there are two why not have been in the other to avoid waiting? Wifi is available on the terrace. Thank you again and see you soon

Local attractions

For a rare and scenic treat, descend the spectacular Gorges de l’Ardèche by canoe from the campsite, passing under the Pont d’Arc and stopping off at river beaches for a picnic and refreshing dip. Still on the water, expert anglers can fish for perch, pike and carp, while novices might have better luck trying for grayling or trout. To introduce a bit of culture into your holiday plans, check out fine-art exhibitions at the hilltop château in Vogüé (20 minutes’ drive), and have a wander down the village’s Rue des Puces, possibly the narrowest street in France. Dubbed a ‘village of character’, Balazuc (15 minutes) is another pretty spot spread up steep slopes from the River Ardèche; have a look at the unusual, fortified 13th-century church and stop off in a pavement café for a glass of something chilled accompanied by local goat’s cheese and olives. Go underground at Grotte Chauvet 2 (40 minutes) to see stunning replicas of prehistoric cave paintings and dioramas of woolly mammoths and bison, and then visit the present-day descendants of the bison – the Eurasian oxen – in spacious enclosures at Parc Animalier des Gorges de l’Ardèche (45 minutes).
