  • Laidback, family-friendly Ardèche site 10 minutes’ drive from Beaumont
  • Adventure sports bookable on site; Gecco Aventure 20 minutes’ drive
  • Food shop open in high season; wild swimming and fishing on the Baume
After a family-friendly Ardèche outdoor holiday well off the normal busy tourist routes? Peace and quiet are synonymous with Camping Relais Des Brison, a relaxed and leafy hideaway 10 minutes’ drive from the rural hamlet of Beaumont and sitting on the banks of the Baume river in a verdant, sun-drenched valley in the south of the region. The tree-shaded pitches are tucked into 10 acres of woodland with 400 metres of private riverside, along which you can go wild swimming and fishing. The site is also the springboard for numerous hikes and rather more hardcore sports like paragliding and caving in the region. Facilities for active types on site include a playground, pétanque court, volleyball pitch and ping-pong table – but if you prefer you can simply settle under the shade of the trees with a good book. To help with this, there’s a library in reception, where you can also pick up visitor information and maps. Stock up on local produce from the store, where there’s also a bread-delivery service (both open July and August only). You can whip up an alfresco feast at the communal barbecue, and if you fancy a change of scenery, there are a couple of auberges and pizza restaurants within 10 minutes’ drive.

Local attractions

So what’s it to be? Leisurely strolls, picnics and swims off the pocket-sized beaches along the Baume river or feats of derring-do? If you pick the latter, you can have a go at canoeing, horse riding, fly fishing, paragliding, potholing or canyoning all within half an hour’s drive. Simply organise your adventures with the site’s partners through staff at reception. You can try your hand on the via ferrata climbing course at Gecco Aventure (20 minutes’ drive), or safely introduce the kids to the joys of zipwiring and treetop courses at Hold on to the Branches (50 minutes). There are also rides suitable for younger kids at Accrobranche Indy Parc (55 minutes), as well as spine-tingling zipwires over the Ardèche forest. Experience time travel back to prehistory with a visit to the replica cave paintings of mammoths and bears at Grotte Chauvet 2 - Ardèche (an hour), where there are also immersive dioramas of Stone Age life in the region.
