  • Spacious family site 15 minutes’ walk from the village of Visan
  • A 20-minute drive from Nyons and 25 minutes from Vaison-la-Romaine
  • Well-maintained facilities including a restaurant and bar with terrace
If, when picking a holiday, you look for somewhere peaceful with plenty of nature, yet still home to modern conveniences, you may have struck gold at Camping de l'Hérein. Surrounded by the lavender fields, sunflowers, and olive trees of Provence, this spacious site has plenty of natural hedges and shading from local trees, plus modern, well-maintained facilities including wheelchair-accessible bathrooms and showers. There are plenty of facilities that’ll (hopefully) keep the kids in good spirits, from the water park (open during high season only) – with an outdoor pool, additional kids’ paddling pool and a sunbathing deck – to the pétanque court and large playground with a trampoline, swings, wooden structures and 25-metre zipwire. Themed evenings and a kids' club are also up and running. The location must get a special mention, too. Between Vaucluse and Drôme Provençale, Camping de l’Hérein is in Enclave des Papes, known for its vineyards, truffles and medieval papal history. It's right on the banks of the Visan river, a 15-minute walk from the centre of the village of the same name, where there are yet more restaurants (and shops should you need to pick up a few bits and bobs). A short drive away are the colourful Provençal markets of Nyons (around 20 minutes) and Vaison-la-Romaine (25 minutes). Hiking and cycling trails are also all around, including a route to the foot of Mont Ventoux. When hunger strikes after your adventures, retreat to the terrace at the on-site restaurant and bar, La Gam’l à César. Local produce is the star of the show here, alongside regional products and popular Visan wines (glass of red, anyone?).

Local attractions

Where to begin? Surely old Visan (15 minutes’ walk), to walk along the narrow stone streets and climb to the castle ruins. Then, more castles? Some good picks include the Renaissance-era Château de Grignan (20 minutes’ drive), in one of the listed Most Beautiful Villages of France, or the medieval Castle of Suze-la-Rousse. If you’re keen to stretch your legs somewhere else with a good view, take your pick from the limestone ridges of Dentelles de Montmirail (50 minutes), huge Mont Ventoux (an hour) or Les Gorges du Toulourenc (45 minutes). You could always cool off afterwards at Lac de la Pignedoré beach (35 minutes) or wind down with some fishing or a picnic at Etang de Bel-air (15 minutes). If more historical sightseeing at Vaison-la-Romaine (25 minutes) – Roman remains – or the Roman Theatre of Orange (half an hour) don’t appeal to the kids, perhaps take them to Crocodile Farm (half an hour) to check out the crocs, snakes and giant tortoises.
